Im just going to tack on this topic.

Given the current economic situation (still employed but foreseeing a bleak future). I'm thinking of selling my commuter car (ford fiesta with 13K kms).

This is the firs car I've sold in Canada, and I've read that besides getting a blue book value, I should get a Safety Inspection Report.

Some questions for the CP knowledge:
- Do I show the car at my home or do I take it to a neutral location (mall, school, park)
- What do I do with the plates (just take them off and take them to a registry?)
- What if the buyer wants to take it to his/her mechanic, do I go with them? or let them take the vehicle?
- Do I need a bill of sale (contract) or just endorse/sign the registration?

I apologize for my complete ignorance (stupidness).

Thank You!!!

Safety Inspections are only required on vehicles 12 yrs of age or older. A pre-purchase inspection is something any serious buyer is probably going to want to do. I've heard good things about InspectaCar
https://inspectacar.ca/

1) Think most people would agree meeting at a nearby strip mall is a better idea.
2) If you're not buying a new car, yes, return the plates to the registry.
3) Not sure about the best answer to that one these days.
4) Bill of sale is better as there is more details as to what's being agreed upon. In particular, the "sold as is" part would be why I'd take on over just signing over the registration. I have a .pdf bill of sale, let me know if you would like a copy.

1 - meet at a neutral location.
2 - keep the plates, you own them, put them on your next vehicle.
3 - you could go with them, or have them leave you their vehicle. Meet them at say Timmies. They take your vehicle, you take their keys and enjoy a coffee.
4 - Use a bill of Sale. This one is good:

I went through this last year too. It's confusing for sure.

1. Either works. Neutral location is fine, but people showing up at your home is ok too. I definitely understand some prefer neutral location though, and I did both when selling my car last year.

2. They are yours. Do not give them to the next guy. Put them on next car, or if not needed on next car, might be able to recover a little money if lots of time left on registry (sticker thing).

3. I would grab the address, take it to the business (NOT RANDOM DUDE) and then send him the report or tell him to talk to the mechanic to get the report (probably tell him to pay for it and not let work go through until it's agreed he pays?) Some guys will rip you off this amount. If they want the car and are serious, they pay. Dude I did it with did this, paid for report. Report said excess issues than what I had already told him (extra few hundred to fix. I lowered the sales price of the vehicle a bit based on this. He won. Spent a hundred bucks or whatever it was and negotiated me down a few hundred on a car he really wanted. I still sold it more than those damn car fixer guys who flip cars on Kijiji) - Car was a '01, it was expected repairs were necessary.

4. Grab a bill of sale and state "SOLD AS IS". Tell them to pound sand if they come back saying something random wrong with car. Allows protection in the rare occasion you need it. https://ama.ab.ca/auto-and-driving/b...-selling-cars/ When I sold mine, I used the selling form on the AMA website. One copy for the guy and one for me with both our signatures.

Late to the party, but figured I'd chime in.

For any other item, meet at a neutral location is fine. For a car (unless it's a cheap beater/winter car), I always prefer to meet at the location the car is stored (ie: at seller's home, preferably in garage), for a number of reasons:

- Car/engine is still warm if they take it to a neutral location. If a bearing or something else that makes noise as a pre-cursor to failure is starting to go, often times the noise goes away when the engine is warm.

- If you view the car in it's parking area you can sometimes see if there are any obvious oil leaks. Not so much in a parking lot.

- Completely subjective, but my take none-the-less: If it's parked in a garage, I usually suspect the owner treats the garage in a similar fashion they treat the car. If I have to climb over a pile of crap to get into the driver's seat, I assume the car has been treated in a similar fashion.

The 'As Is' thing on a bill of sale isn't necessary. All used vehicles sold privately in Alberta are automatically sold As Is, regardless of whether or not it's stated. Add it if it makes you feel better, I still do sometimes, but it's not needed.

There is a presumption the vehicle is sold as-is unless there was a warranty or representation provided which rebuts that. That representation could be verbal.

To avoid any misunderstanding or disagreement about what may have been said, make sure it is in writing, I most recently wrote the following into the standard Province of Alberta Bill of Sale:

"This vehicle is sold as-is without representation or warranty as to condition."

This is much better than relying upon the presumption.
