The mother is a friend of my wife. Not a close friend, but close enough that I've interacted with her on multiple occasions

The combination of a) knowing the mother and b) having 2 kids of my own makes this pretty hard to think about.

If you're too tired or think you're drowning just get on your back, because you'll float right up with very little effort and can stay that way for hours if you need to.

Yes. I have flipped on my back during the swim portion of a couple open water triathlons. I am a really slow swimmer, but know I can go decent distances in fairly rough and cold water during these events.

If I had to add clothes, and a 6 of beer before the event, I do wonder though.

A 12 year old girl from Calgary has drowned in Osoyoos Lake in British Columbia.

This is the second drowning in Osoyoos Lake this year. On June 28th, a 34 year old man from North Vancouver drowned after falling off his Sea-Doo. He also wasn’t wearing a lifejacket.

Sounds like the families were walkin by the lake and no one in their party knew how to swim and rescue wasnt started until others got there. Tough situation. You often hear of wouldbe rescuers drowning themselves.

What a horrible story, but it highlights why it is so important that adults and kids have at least a rudimentary ability to swim.

IMO, learning to swim isn't a luxury it is a need.

So sad. We should really add swimming lessons to the school curriculum. Along with first aid, basic money management skills, etc. Basically CALM but every year from K-12. Learning swimming isn't like learning baseball or some other sport that doesn't really affect your life one way or another; it's a mandatory skill every human should have.

I was thinking about this the other day while I was registering my 2 year old daughter for her next set of swim lessons. It is really economical for swim lessons in this city. It maxes out around $60.00 for an 8 class lesson. I know some people are on a really tight financial budget but I am sure you can come up with $60.00 per year to spend on a lesson for your kid that could potentially save their life some day

Elementary Schools in Sylvan had swimming included in school.

Not sure what will happen now the pool is closed.

Hearing about a drowning brings back bad memories for me. My best friend from when I was 9-11 years old drowned 20 feet from a dock at a lake in BC. Never knew how to swim. His older brother stood helplessly on the dock, he didn't know how to swim either. They grew up no where near a pool in rural Alberta.

My kids can both swim, but we still supervise them both (9 and 6). Not sure at what age I will let go of that.

My kids school has one week of swimming lessons every year. I assumed it was part of the Phys. Ed curriculum, but maybe it's a school by school choice?
