Went with Riser. Unfortunately his status with Flames fans is influenced by his disaster of a stint as GM. We forget what a great player and leader he was.

That's funny, I wrote up this comment for round #3 and then held off until today to post it for round #4:

Risebrough really helped turn this franchise around. His arrival from Montreal sparked the transition of the Flames from an okay team without much of an identity to an NHL powerhouse that could go toe-to-toe with the Oilers. When people talk about bringing in a leader from a winning organization to turn a team around, they're talking about what Risebrough brought from Montreal to Calgary. I think his legacy as a GM has unfairly tainted his importance to the Flames as a player.

I'm sticking with Pepper, but I have no problem with Riser either.

I think Risebrough's disastrous tenure and legacy as a GM has rightfully tainted his importance to the Flames as a player.

Going with Jimmy Pep.

Kinda surprised to see so many votes for such current flames. Nostalgia doesn't seem to be a strongly weighted attribute in this Captains poll.

Risebrough was a great player and leader. Too bad too many young fans here don't remember those days.

Nieuwendyk bailed on the team when he had a valid contract like Yashin did in Ottawa. He doesn't deserve any accolades from the Flames or their fans.

I'm trying to think of a current NHL comparable. Ryan Callaghan?

Remember that fight between Riser and Snepts (I think) that migrated to the hallway after they were sent off the ice? LOL.

But I went with Sarge just to show some old school love.

Yeah IMO Nieuwendyk drops a bit because he essentially quit on the team.

I was looking at the longevity of the captains after Nieuwendyk left there was a new captain every other year until Iggy. Without doing a lot of digging, Gio is probably around 7th on list for time as the captain. So even though he is just stepping into his 3rd season he has already past the majority of the players on the list.

I'm still going with Brad Marsh for the 1981 playoff run that made me a lifelong Flames fan.

It would be useful to know how many games each player was captain.

I'm a sentimental sap, and feel McCrimmon is underrated.

Those two points, pushed my vote the Sarges way.

Yeah I think that's a really good one. It is hard because Riser was really the definition of an old-school type player. He was old-school when he played 30 years ago.

He HATED the other team. You largely don't have that anymore.

Feeling shame for my Russell vote. Might have gone a little too heavy on the nostalgia. Riser is my pick from here. He impacted the culture of the team and you really had the feeling he HATED the opposition. Great trade for Fletcher.
