Not sure what you mean here. You don't mean that video games should be in the Olympics, do you? Maybe you mean an "Video Game Olympics"?

Yeah. I thought it was nutty when I first heard the idea, but now I kind of think "Why not?". Video games are tests of coordination, response time, mental endurance etc. Some day, well down the line, I wouldn't be shocked to live to see it happen and if it does I don't think I'll be upset.

You could say the same thing for typing tests and Jeopardy, which also aren't sports.

Video game competitions aren't my thing, but go to town if you are into it. If these guys can get rich doing it, good for them.

But let's not go so far as to pretend that they are sports, and the people taking part are athletes. It should never have any place in the Olympics, which should be about actual sports and real athletes.

Of course knowing the money-hungry IOC, if they can make a buck off it, ya never know.

I'd like my kids to put their life passion into something that would payoff in terms of happiness, satisfaction and financial comfort. I think the chances of this happening with video games are slim at best.

I can add some insight to this as I had at once played a computer game competitively. It's absolutely exhausting. The studying, analysis of battles, theory crafting, pre fight prep, extremely strict schedules and recruitment. Honestly it pays off at the very top echelon but to give you an idea, the group I had played with hit top 50 in the world and held onto that for a substantial amount of time. In the 4 years I played this game (the last year was casually) I had amounted nearly 200 days played. That really shocked me and made me reevaluate the time I was spending on this game. Im glad ive stepped away from it, a much wiser move. These people are really the cream of the crop.

Similarly, don't be jealous of the professional gamers. Imagine playing the same game, obsessively, over and over ten hours a day, every day. That's what it takes to be as good at games as these guys are. It's not playing anymore, it's a job and a career. The last thing you'd want to do is ever play a video game just for fun, it would ruin the whole thing.

Fascinating new world, but much like how 'video game tester' sounded like an awesome job when you were a kid, very misunderstood. These guys are very talented or very skilled and extremely dedicated to what they're doing.
I'm jealous of NHL players. The game they love is now their job. And the hard work and sacrifices it took to get to the NHL is unbelievable. I play hockey for fun, but make no mistake, I'd love to play professionally.

Rather be a lets player instead of a professional gamer. Your shelf life is only a few years and you have to actually win to make money

Indeed, these guys must go sit in an office cubicle on weekends and do filing for fun.

Pro gaming, ok. It's like playing poker. I don't believe it's a sport (and I play it competitively) but it's a big skill set, it's a brain game, it's competitive.

But these guys who comment and youtube? I just don't get it. I think I'm too old. South Park did an episode on it. I guess to each their own, but I don't get it, and I personally wonder how much three is to it. I dunno if I agree that they are really that talented (besides being great gamers). Their jokes are lame. I think it's more that we have so much spare time, people will watch anything.

Why not just PLAY the game yourself? Growing up, that was one of the hardest parts. Having to share the controller, haha. Yeah it's fun hanging out with your buds, and your often exploring the game together, but everyone here waited for the time it was their turn again.

Watching streamers, can be quite fun. League of Legends has probably the biggest viewership and some really entertaining streamers.

Why would you watch? Well why do you watch the best hockey players in the world, I like to see how the best play a game I enjoy.

I always see people arguing about the term sport, but you guys seem to forget the call this E Sports, and the top level players in the world dedicate an insane about of time, effort, training to reach professional levels.

E Sports is already massive, and will tower over traditional sport viewership's in the near future.

And that's easy to say from an outsider perspective whose only ever done it for fun. But basically 8 months a year away from home and family, countless hours in the gym, extreme physical demands on your body, and tremendous amounts of pressure/stress... There's a reason they play golf all summer instead of hockey.

I'm jealous of these guys salaries but would I want to play hockey for a living? I really don't think so, the lifestyle would make me really unhappy.

If you play poker competitively, why wouldn't you want to watch a stream of Phil Ivey? (also, Poker streams exist)

You get direct access to him, ask him why he played the hand the way he did and in real time, he answers you. Seems pretty cool to me.

I'm jealous of the NFL lifestyle. 6-7 month offseason depending on if you make the playoffs or not, only one game a week, and it's not even a requirement that you live in the same city as you play in during the season. I wouldn't exactly want to be a defensive/offensive lineman due to a really short career window likely ending with brain damage, but any other position seems like a dream career

There was a marquee game player who licensed his name to mouse, keyboard and anything in between makers. I think his name rhymes with "Thaz" but I couldn't remember it now. That was like ten years ago or longer.

You say this like no professional athlete has ever sat out due to a finger injury or less.

E games is a collection of games that is constantly changing. So audiences have to re-learn the rules and the games. While Football or Hockey is basically the same games played over the last century. I doubt e games will catch up to traditional big sports' popularity.
