Would have loved to for for Mulliniks here, as he was one of my first favorite players, but I can't overlook Gruber. He was a true superstar for the team.
I anticipate that in that not-so-distant future the answer to this question will be JD - but not yet. Not enough time.
Some intriguing choices here with a lot of guys that I liked a lot
- Batista for his wacky batting stance
- The heroics of Ed Sprauge
- The glove and leadership of Scott Rolen
- The great platoon of Iorg and Mulliniks

But it is Gruber all the way.

Yeah it is Gruber, but it may be Donaldson in pretty short order if he keeps his play up.

Gruber. Still bitter that he got robbed of that triple play.

Gruber had lots of talent and some great years but for some reason I remember him similar to Phaneuf - all the tools but lacking baseball IQ. Maybe I've never forgiven him for botching that triple play in the World Series. Still the best 3B for the Jays though

Should note that, in one of his 3 stints with the Jays, Tony Fernandez played a lot of 3rd - but for the purpose of this exercise we will consider him for SS.

He didn't botch it. The ump did.

Maybe, but he had an easy throw to second for the out rather than chasing and diving. Probably my Gruber bias showing

Gruber for sure, Donaldson could be the best of the bunch but he has not been with the Jays long enough for the vote in my opinion.

Voted Gruber. Scott Rolen had a great career but not so much with the Jays.

I vote Donaldson, offensively and defensively the best of the bunch, for now, forever.

I think my vote has to go to the following:

Or it goes to Gruber, sorry for my momentary lack of judgement.

I think Donaldson will be soon and I almost picked him, but right now it is Gruber.

No actually I agree. I thought he made it a more complicated play than it needed to be.
So he could have executed it better - but still a major botch by an umpire.

Say what you want about Lawrie's personality, but he will likely be a gold glover at some point in his career. Excellent defensive player, decent offensive player, just can't stay healthy/consistent.

Rolen is the consummate pro, and really played a strong third base despite being on the downslope of his career as a Jay. Plus, he had enough offense to make him valuable.

Loved the bat of both Batista and Glaus, but they weren't great defensively.

Mulliniks is still a favorite of mine, but I think it's sentimentality more than anything.

Sprague was always a solid but not spectacular player. I just always felt he was a filler until we got a real third baseman.

Hinske...the less said the better. Such a disappointment after an electric rookie campaign.

Donaldson would be the guy if he had played a full season with the Jays, and he might be the all time greatest we have in time, but I couldn't quite vote for him.

Had to give it to Gruber, who had the best combination of glove/bat/tenure/accomplishments with the Jays. People often forget that he had a 31 HR and 118 RBI campaign with a Silver Slugger AND Gold Glove award in 1990.

What truly makes me bitter about that entire play is that if White made that catch as a Yankee or Dodger, it would be held up there with Willie Mays as one of the greatest in baseball history. But since he was a Jay, it is grossy underrated.

No love for Corey Koskie?!?

Gruber was my first "favorite" Blue Jay -- him and Dave Stieb. Good times.

Gruber always frustrated the crap out of me. Someone compared him to Phaneuf, which actually hits a chord for me.

Donaldson has only been here half a season, but he is money. He's a quiet leader. He's the kind of player that can carry a team on his back.

He is everything Gruber tried so hard to be.

Donaldson for me, and it isn't close.
