just relax man

the poll itself tabulates and tells you who's right. you don't need to play that role yourself.
Or the poll could simply indicate how much people remember. How many people on here even experienced Lanny's captaincy or watched him play? The majority opinion is not necessarily correct.

TBF that was a pretty freak injury. It's not like he has some nagging issues that he always misses games with.

Don't know if I can recall such a dramatic change in the fortunes of a sports franchise that was greater than the difference between Hartley-coached Iginla-lead Flames team and the Hartley-coached, Giordano-Lead Flames team.
Jarome was traded on March 27, 2013. Over the next 82 regular season games the Flames went 30-41-11, which would give you a 71 point season. Amongst non-lockout years, that would be the second worst record in the history of the franchise.

This notion that the Flames turn around can be tied directly to the leadership change is highly questionable.

I think this is why its hard for some to vote for some of these guys. The age of some posters kind of leaves them in the Gio or Iggy group. There is no reason for a young poster to vote for Lanny, Fleury , ect if they never saw them play.

That said i will show my age and my vote is for Lanny. Iggy comes in at #2 for me. I love everything Gio has done since being named captain but the years experience of captain is to small right now with him. Hell the guy has not even signed an extension yet. Would love to see him sign extension and have a re-vote in 5 years.

Since the 08/09 season he's missed 101 games (including playoffs) due to injury. I guess opinons will vary, but to me that's significant.

I was leaning towards Lanny for that reason, but we ALL know who the REAL 2004 Champions are. #ItWasIn So why penalize Iggy just because nobody in the war room over in Toronto said, "Hey, the guys over at ABC say that puck was in. Maybe we should take a look at it." Iggy carrying that '04 team to what should have been a championship is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen.

This is extremely simplistic analysis. The 2013-14 season, in which the Flames finished 27th in the league, was the most entertaining and fun to watch season since I can't even remember when. Possibly since the '04 run. You could immediately tell that there was a significant change in culture. The work ethic did a 180 degree turn.

I have the exact same felling of a player carrying a '04 team on his back but that player was wearing goalie pads in my memory

I disagree that you could "immediately tell" there was a significant change. By the end of the season? Sure. But until mid to late January, they were terrible.

Take a look at this PGT for the loss vs. the Jets on January 17, 2014 - lots of shame, the expectation of a long period of struggle, even a "blow it up" and "train wreck" comment or two. Not the "they lost, but loved the effort this team brings every night" thread you would expect based on your memory.

Edit: And, yeah, I picked the last game before the Canucks brawl intentionally. Because that game is the true fulcrum for the Flames fortunes. That game galvanized the team and kicked off the great run at the end of that season, which carried over to last. And that's all on Hartley. Not Giordano, who, like I said, I love, but Hartley.

Yes, him too. but Iggy was in the conversation for the Conn Smythe if the Flames had won the series (5 games to 2).

Well done. It's just like Flash Walkin to connect those non existent dots though. Haters gonna hate.

I'm answers based on the latter.

Can't pick Lanny for #1 as he wasn't even the full time captain for the cup team. He shared the C. Can't pick Iginla as I don't think he showed enough leadership on the ice in his final years with the team - he undermined what some of the coaches were trying to do.

So went with Gio, for many of the reasons Bingo outline.
I picked based on the latter as well. Still went with Iginla.

Giordano is a great player and fantastic leader. Right now though? Iginla easily runs away with this vote.

Two seasons from Giordano aren't nearly enough to supplant Iginla at the top.

Read the context. It was in response to a poster who considered the poll results as proof of who was "right" as to the greatest captain in Flames history, which is, of course, a very subjective discussion.

With both Iggy and Gio it's hard to separate their influence as captains from the coaches they played for. Who was really leading the team in '04, Iggy or Sutter? Who has really been leading the Flames recently, Gio or Hartley?

In terms of on-ice performance of leadership, I can't think of anyone being as powerful a leader as Iggy was in the '04 cup run. That was probably the pinnacle captaincy performance in Flames history. Gio hasn't achieved that level yet.

The impact Lanny had on his teammates

Respect is what makes him the best captain

Quote:
“The guys, who respected him so much, knew this could be Lanny’s last kick at the cat,” said head coach Terry Crisp of the most obvious motivator working in the Flames’ favour that spring.

“I don’t know, but I have to believe in my heart that played a big part in the guys’ makeup and structure that night in Montreal for that game. And when he scored that goal, if you saw our bench, you’d know it did. If you think Lanny was the happiest guy in the Forum, take a look at our bench. He had a lot of competition.”
Quote:
"One of the cool things I remember about that is how many people were still in the building. Maybe it was because they’d never experienced losing the Cup in their building. But I always thought that was one of the classiest moves by the fans. You sometimes forget it’s just a game and you applaud great play and sportsmanship.”

No, says several of McDonald’s teammates, they were there largely to cheer McDonald — one of the greatest ambassadors the game has ever had.

After all, everyone on the ice for that photo and celebration had played with an eye on winning one for No. 9.

“They make a bigger deal of it now, like Ray Bourque — ‘You gotta win one for Ray or you gotta win one for Iggy or whoever,’ ” said teammate Jamie Macoun.

“But we were trying to win one for Lanny, without anybody ever saying it.”
