Wow, I'm incredibly jealous of your friend!!!! Really enjoyed the finale... All the correspondents was pretty special, really hits home the comedic talent that
the show has had over it's 16 years.
I'm really really going to miss Stewart. Like I said earlier in the thread, having him and Colbert around to provide comic relief helped me get through some pretty roughy times over the years, so strange to think they've both moved on.

Really enjoyed the Daily show in the past. Haven't watched it as much as I don't believe he has been a neutral commentator on politics and life anymore.
But I tuned into the final for old times sake. Man he had a lot of correspondents that moved on to promising careers. Gotta love a guy like Stewart who has helped so many people out.

That's been his biggest criticism over the years, but I just don't buy it. One political party has consistently provided far more crazy over the years for Jon to cover than the other, it's just a comedian working with what he's got. If you watched his interviews with Obama he didn't shy away from criticism. The only reason that Jon Stewart has been viewed as increasingly more liberal over the years is because of how much the Republican party has shifted to the extreme right, watching him from the beginning when he took the show over from Kilborn his political views haven't really changed
That finale was great, but man it sucks now that it's hit home that he's done. Losing both Colbert and Stewart in the same year is a big blow, though Colbert is coming back on Late Night there's no way he's going to be as political or insightful as he was on the Report. Watching the craziness of the US election cycle without either of them covering it is going to feel empty

This is going to be a really crappy US Election without those two.

What a hard show that was to watch. Its like losing a late-night friend.
Jon's just always been there.

Basically this, in the last few weeks they pulled out a bunch of clips bashing Obama & the Clintons.
He really had no problem going after everyone, it was just so easy to go after Republicans more often and harder.
Maybe you could claim he was lazy, but not partisan.

Plus he went after the VA mess hard, essentially laying it all on Obama for failing to live up to his original campaign promise. He also called out CNN and MSNBC for their idiocy at every opportunity, but FOX just happened to provide far more material to work with than all the other networks combined

He also knows his audience, which is younger, generally college educated, urban and probably largely from the Northeast.

So much talent went through those doors. Colbert most of all - his new show should be fantastic.

I want to believe, but he's still doing a late night show on a major network, so it will follow the standard formula. Monologue, small sketch bit, guest interview 1, guest interview 2, and musical/comedy act. I want desperately for Colbert to break that old and tired formula and really make something unique with Late Night, but I doubt CBS would ever let that happen

Fallon does a great job with it. I think he'll be fantastic.

I love the Colbert nerdyness link with LOTR. It seems they scripted that portion of the bit and Jon just let Colbert script it all.

Fallon's definitely not my taste.
I'd point instead to CBS having let Craig Ferguson go totally off reservation for years as a promising indication that Colbert will get to make whatever show he wants.

I've been thinking about this the last couple weeks, and I legitimately wonder if Stewart is not well. I know the "official" reason is he wants to do other things, but it just seems insane to me that he would shut it down right now with an election coming up. They're really the bread and butter of the show. It would seem like such a perfect bookend to wrap it up after the election.
I know that can slide into "Well lets just do a year of this crazy new president" and "well now lets do 2020" but still, the timing seems so odd to me. Indecision 2016 seems like a great endpoint.

I wish he stuck around for it as well, but their elections take so damn long that it would just never end. I think it was about two years away when he announced he was going to quit.
And, as John Oliver said (give or take) last night, "the election is still 457 days away. There will be children born on election day whose parents haven't even met yet".
Also, his replacement starts on September 28th, so they have given him more than a year of what will hopefully be a wildly entertaining circus/election.

I wouldn't be surprised if they set up some sort of hour long special or something when the election is much closer (like in October 2016 or something).
Honestly, I think he's just burnt out. You can tell he was getting to his breaking point with the media, Fox News and the generally circus of US politics. It'd be tough to sit through that stuff all day for material without completely losing faith.
