Man, I just had my Samoyed in to be looked at where this was discussed. He's not been doing great for the past year or so. Doesn't want to go for walks at night anymore, and keeps to himself a lot more. Also has had some accidents in the house too recently. Now he has a huge swelling on his nose, and he's been sneezing blood recently. Took him in to have him examined and they suggest that it's likely an abscessed tooth causing the swelling but not sure about the nasal stuff right now. He's 12 years old and this is looking like a couple thousand.

But I hate to just up and put him down, because on the leash in the vets office his tail is up, and he's happy to see the vet, and get his attention. At this point as much as me, or any other Albertan shouldn't throw away that kind of money since we're all doomed to lose our jobs and starve....I think I owe it to my poor guy to at least try this and see if this is the problem, or if there is something more severe before I finally agree to have him put down.

Still it's brutally difficult, and I certainly have a lot more understanding to know what it's like to have to think about putting your pet down when you really don't know what's really wrong with them.

Hate seeing this thread bumped. Hate being the one bumping it even more.

Yesterday I had to put down my 16 year old cat. Barnaby had been diagnosed with lung cancer and was given a couple of weeks at the most to live. He made it longer than that. He was retaining water so much, it looked like he had a football in his stomach. He was having issues eating and was not eating his pills anymore. So we made the hard decision to let him go before he went through any pain. Being there when they put the needle in his arm was one of the hardest things I've ever done. To just have him go limp was horrible, but I'm glad he had someone with him. After losing Gelli (our dog) just after Christmas and Barnaby yesterday, this has been a crap-tastic year for our pets.
Barnaby wasn't an ordinary cat. I can't explain it. I miss him like crazy.

They are reunited. Besties.

With my daughter.

Sorry for your loss, Puxlut. Unfortunately, I've been there as well.

It is extremely heart wrenching to be there when they put your friend to sleep. For months that was the one memory I was always left with when I thought about Biz. It seemed so incredibly unfair, and for a long time I resented that I choose to be with him and was only left with that constant reminder of sorrow and pain.

However, after a while I was able to look beyond that moment to everything that made him so special to me. It took some time and healing, but I would never, ever go back and avoid holding him as he exited our lives. They give us so much that it is only right that we be there with them at the end.

Eventually, I know if you aren't already that you'll be comfortable with that decision. I'm almost certain that Barnaby appreciated it.

I hear you about no ordinary cat. My Igster wasn't either. Iggy actually looked a lot like your Barnaby. It hasn't even been a full year since my wife and I had to put down our dog Max and cat Igster (about six months apart), so I know exactly what you are going though. I still miss them very much, every day.

Sorry for your loss Puxlut.

Yeah, my dog Yukon ' s blood work came back really bad and the X-rays have the vet pretty convinced that it's cancer. Today he seems good, even came out for a walk tonight, still eats, so it doesn't semester that he's suffering. The idea of having to take him in to have him put down is certainly unerving.

I had to put down my Cat today unfortunately. He was diabetic and getting insulin for the last three years and was just developing too many issues with kidneys going, pancreatic issue, all three needing different type of diets to help with that he wasn't eating much. He had a mass growing in his abdomen but it wasn't suspected to be cancer but causing issues. had recent bladder infections, and he was developing issues in two legs where he was having troubles jump up small distances or walking stairs. He was 12 years old with a lot going wrong and he wasn't happy or himself anymore, but I feel guilty making the decision.

One of the hardest things we have to do with our pets is to help them die comfortably if their suffering would otherwise pain them. I know it's hard but we owe it to them. You did the right thing.

Lost my girl on Friday, when my parents had to put her down. She's 16 years old and about 4 months ago, we were told she had severe arthritis on her spine due to her age. We gave her medicine and pain killer and also some glucosamine on the side and she seemed to improve a lot. Prior to bringing her to the vet the first time, she wasn't interested in walking anymore and her back right paw would land on its top, instead of the sole like it normally should. The medicine and glucosamine however really seemed to turn things around.

On Friday, she started yelping and barking (she never barks) violently and chewed up the inside of her mouth, probably due to the pain she suddenly felt and both her back legs stopped functioning. My parents took her to the vet and they made the tough call.

I couldn't be there to say goodbye because I was stuck in a meeting at work. I'm glad I got to see her the Monday before when I went over to pay her and my parents a visit.

Yuki lived a great life and was loved so much by us. It's hit me hard as I've never lost a pet before. My parents are absolutely devastated.
