This is very interesting. Has this ever happened before? Can't say I blame him. Be payed as a pro hockey player at 17, live in a new place, travel Europe. Sounds pretty sweet.

Interesting indeed. I wonder if this opens the flood gates for other top prospects to leave major junior or college and get paid in Europe until NHL time comes.

I'm excited for this! Possibly a new route for junior players to the big leagues. Should be interesting to watch what happens here.

New route yes, but it is harder to track prospects in Europe.

As Ryan Kennedy of the Hockey News reported, this also shields Matthews from a lot of the media circus in North America for being the likely top pick in 2016.

All this to try and avoid being drafted by the Oilers 1st overall

The flip side is that it is a pretty important year, developmentally. And he is foregoing all developmental coaching. As a pro team, they will be looking to win, not make him a better player.

IMO, it is short-sighted.

Could be that him or his family could use the money as well. Will be interesting to see if others follow suit.

Not sure how you can say that when many of the Euros that get drafted are done so out of these leagues and many use it as a plus that they have been playing against men and not kids.

What's the difference between this and drafting a Swede out of the SEL?

Apparently he has had lots of communication with the coach (Marc Crawford) and they have some sort arrangement where he will be guaranteed ice time and what not. Still a risk? Yes, but I'm sure his agent has minimized that risk as much as possible.

Teams in the CHL are trying to win too. Players develop there because they are so young, but I would argue the AHL is more focused on development than the CHL.

Unfortunately, it's more likely the Oilers finish 26th and still get him because he drops a little from first overall.

You forget that the Oilers European scouting is limited to Youtube.

Disagree, he wants to fall down the draft charts and by doing this the Hockey News will list him lower.

It just goes to show the lengths people will go to in order to avoid the Oilers.

McDavid is probably kicking himself for not thinking of this.

Can he leave them mid-season and go to Everett? Is there a deadline at any time?

I believe so yes. I am sure that his agent negotiated an out clause if they are unhappy with his ice time or playing conditions.

The only deadline might be the WHL trade deadline.

Well, the Sedins and Kopitar managed to develop just fine under Crawford.

How many years does he have to play over there before he's declared a free agent and can't be annexed by the Ice District
