Seems like an unnecessary risk. You'll get paid, kid. Think longer term.
|
I'm sure his agent and the team have clearly discussed the fact that he's going to get icetime or he just bolts to the WHL to finish the year.
The thing about the NHL is that the risk of dropping from 1st overall isn't that bad. In other leagues your salary is heavily tied to your draft position which isn't really the case in the NHL.

The kid broke Pat Kane's USNTDP scoring record, unless he literally forgets how to play hockey in switzerland, he is almost certainly going to go top 5 in next year's draft.

Good for him. A chance to play the game your love abroad and get paid, while at the same time he's a lock as a top pick during his draft year. Win-win.

Pat Brisson, Auston Matthews family advisor says playing in Switzerland is an option, but no decision has been made. Decision this week.

Seems like a no brainer considering he's a top pick and really has nothing to lose.
Surprised more top prospects don't pick this route.

Especially since it's come out that most WHLers make like $20 bucks a week to line the pockets of ownership groups.

Interesting option for a top prospect. I'd like to see how he does over there and if that douses his hype a bit as he forgoes the traditional development paths in a draft year.
Matthews is good. would be 2-3 this year I think for sure.

I believe he could play in the AHL if he wants to play against men. Just checked and he has to be 18 on Sept. 15 so he misses by two days. Might be safer playing in Europe though with the less body contact.

Unless you are drafted by Portland...
In Switzerland usually they play twice on the week end and practise 3-4 times during the week, like an NCAA schedule. They could see this as better for his development then the long bus rides in thw WHL. In the past I can think of Radek Bonk and Patrik Stefan who tried this only it was the other way around with them comming to NA to play pro as 17 year olds, it really did not help them long term.

Matthews agent says it has been narrowed down to playing in the WHL in Everett or playing for Marc Crawford in Switzerland

Clearly trying to avoid being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers.

He'll be a definite bust like Ovechkin, Malkin, Tarasenko, Josi, and others have after they got sat for veteran players in their draft years.

Would be cool to see Matthews in the WHL. I'd pay to see him play against the Royals.

McDavid was drafted by KHL club Medvescak. He could choose to go play there and rake in some dough. Although Medvescak is not one of the richer clubs in the league.

Green text? Crawford is an absolute DISASTER of a coach. Always has been, always will be.
I hate the canucks as much as the next guy, but they had some great talent during Crawford's years there and he couldn't do anything with it.

The same was likely said about Hartley before his exodus to Europe. Turned out okay once he learned to adapt.
