As long as Wideman doesn't get injured or have a truly awful year, he can be traded next off season with very little trouble - ten teams would want what he brings.

Signing Franson to a 4 year deal more than lilkely has 0 effect on when Hickey, Andersson or Kylington make the team. We are talking about 3 dmen who are 18 and 19 years old. Maybe year 4 of Franson's deal. I would think Morrison, Wotherspoon, Sieloff type prospects would be more effected by an addition of Franson but more than likely not as lots are suggesting Wideman would be moved out
Also I think most are suggesting that Franson isn't better than Wideman but more just a younger, cheaper replacment. If Franson's demands are to high fine no chance you give him 5+ but if you can get him at 4.5 for 4 years that is a much better contract than what Wideman has left
2015/16 - Wideman - 32 - $5.25 million
Franson - 28 - $4.5 million
2016/17 - Wideman - 33 - $5.25 million
Franson - 29 - $4.5 million
2017/18 - Wideman - 34 - ?
Franson - 30 - $4.5 million
2018/19 - Wideman - 35 - ?
Franson - 31 - $4.5 million
Franson will be younger and cheaper when the contract expires than what Wideman is currently. Also you have 3 options before his contract expires. Sign, Trade or let him walk. I don't see why it makes sene to let him walk. Signing him probably makes no sense as he will be 34 turning 35 mid season and probably will want a raise and some term. My guess minimum 3 years at around 6. Or you trade him at the deadline during 16/17 season which will diminish your return and if you are going to trade him why not now? Especially when you could see his minutes diminish with Hamilton, Gio, Brodie being the top 3 minute players on d. Then if you choose to resign him to be 29 years old Franson at $4.5 is much better value than $6 million 35 year old Wideman. Throw on top your point that resigning Wideman in 2 years for 3 years isn't a better option than guys like Kylington, Andersson or Hickey. All sign point to trading Wideman. Now is the best time
