Guys don't get contracts like this in August. Probably looking at 3x3 at this point.

Maybe he doesn't want to play there? Maybe they like Wideman more as a veteran D that can fill a top 3 role for them where Franson is a 5 for Calgary? Flames added Dougie so downgrading from Wideman to Franson in order to get more assets makes sense for the Flames.
I could also see Franson wanting to play in the Hartley system where he can maximize his point totals

If you're right, literally every GM in the league with 3m in cap space should be tripping over themselves to sign him because that's unreal value.

Lot's of people apparently hitting up Lake Louise this year with the low Canadian dollar. Maybe House boating on the Shuswap?

If the Flames could move Engelland, a top six of...
Giordano-Hamilton
Brodie-Fransson
Russell-Wideman
Would be downright frightening.

Is a younger player preferable to a veteran? Sometimes, but usually for cost-control, level of play and upside reasons (which aren't there for Franson, as a 27 year old UFA who will be 28 this season, and hasn't ever produced as much as Wideman had at this point in his career).

It wasn't long ago that about 80 percent of people on here wanted to run Wideman out of town. Not suggesting that you were one but Franson in to replace Wideman and assets back for Wideman makes sense to me
If we could sign Franson 5 million for 4 years is better than keeping Wideman IMO. Wideman coming off a 50+ point season could bring us quality assets back and by trading him now rather than next summer or attempting to resign him is a much better option. Based on production Wideman probably ask for at least 6 maybe 6.5 or 7. Trading him next summer probably decreases the return you get as most of his production came post Giordano injury and with Hamilton added there is no guarantee for 1st pp time this year. If the Flames can add Franson for less money than Wideman makes now longer term than what Wideman has right now its a no brainer to do. Even if we add just draft picks we could be looking at extra picks in 2nd 3rd and 4th in next draft as well as a much better cap situation for the next 4 years than we have with Wideman right now

I hate threads like these, it's one step away from being a moron leaf fan that digs thru Kessel's garbage can to see how many cheeseburger wrappers he can find. Let him have his privacy and fly wherever in peace. It's crap like this that makes free agents want to sign in Columbus or Florida over Canadian markets

I agree. It feels kind of gross to be taking pictures of the guy on a plane and advertising his whereabouts. There are a dozen reasons why he could be flying to Calgary, and probably more than half of those are more probable than him signing with the Flames.

Those people were utterly ridiculous, yes some wanted to actually buy Wideman out, and many posters argued that point with them. Me included.
You don't need to anxiously start cutting ties with players 2 years out of UFA status because of hypothetical decline or hypothetical contract demands.
Seems like a bad case of trying to fix what isn't broken/too much EA NHL games. As I see it the best course of action looks to be let him play out the final years of his prime, his contract ends at 35 and his money comes off the books at a good time for the team needing to shed salary. Nothing needs to be changed from the status quo there.
You don't have to trade or re-sign every player. Contenders don't trade every impending UFA, that would be absurd and counter-productive. Sometimes just letting a guy go at the end of the year is the best move.
As for his PP time,
Gio-Wideman
Brodie-Hamilton
You probably want to give Wideman top PP time because his scoring is his best asset. The only thing Hamilton changes is taking either Russell or Diaz equivalent off the PP.

I'd put my personal odds of him signing with the Flames at about 0.5%.
Lots of players travel through Calgary to visit or en route to somewhere else. Doesn't mean there's an impending signing with the Flames.

Well there's either a disconnect between how you/fans perceive the player v. the league, or the players expectations v. the reality of the offers he's getting, or both.
But it would be highly unusual for a guy to be on the market for this amount of time, and then sign a 5x5 deal.
