I hope we hear if he rented a car, and what he had for lunch in his time here.

He doesn't look happy to be flying to Calgary. Future locker room cancer?

Default Cody Franson on a plane to Calgary

I'm assuming lots of players fly economy. I once sat in front of Scott Hartnell on a flight from Calgary to LA. Unfortunately, we were traveling there for opposite reasons :-(

His brother plays for U of C, could be just coming to hangout with his bro for a few days.

If the Flames could flip Wideman to a team like the stars for a 2nd and 3rd then sign Franson to a 2 year deal that would be amazing

Franson isn't signing a 2 year deal. You're getting him for 5x5, most likely, give or take a year and half a mil of AAV. Just my assessment of the market and his value.

Getting younger doesn't stand on its own legs as a priority without lots of other supporting reasons. I have yet to see a convincing reason why Franson makes this team better.

Is a younger player preferable to a veteran? Sometimes, but usually for cost-control, level of play and upside reasons (which aren't there for Franson, as a 27 year old UFA who will be 28 this season, and hasn't ever produced as much as Wideman had at this point in his career).

I feel bad for the guy, because some guy snaps a photo of him on a flight to Calgary, he will land having to answer questions that may have nothing to do with his career.

Without going too in-depth, Franson has never posted a negative corsi number relative to his teammates and has over the past 3 years scored at a top 30 rate and done so consistently. He's good, and he's still in his prime. In contrast, Wideman is at the age point where guys usually drop off a cliff performance-wise. That's my basic case for why you can expect Franson to be better going forward.

I would give Franson more term as long as the cap hit was slightly lower than Widemans in now

I also look at making moves like this as the best way we go from a playoff team to cup contender. I would have no problem trading Wideman, Gio and Hudler as we now have Frolik, Hamilton and maybe Franson as their replacments. I also see us recovering way more than we gave up to get Hamilton and we get younger on all 3 guys and all 3 would have much much lower cap hits. All 3 would be signed long term and it would give us tons of space to resign Johnny, Monahan and Bennett when their contracts come up and probably be just as good as a team now with more potential in the near future than we do now and more cap flexibilty

If we can get Gio for less than 8 mil for 7 years or less then keep him and move out a guy like Russell as he probably will want a big raise too

I see Brad making these types of moves with moving out these guys in mind. I can't see the Flames going for Franson without someone being moved out as we have some good d prospects that could be pushing to make team now and in near future and no spots for these guys
