Great memory of my first live Wrestling event with my Dad. They announced a change to the card at the beginning of the show, some big name wrestler, can't remember who, was unable to perform. It was one of the highlight matches. Crowd booing and I am so disappointed. Then the announcement, "Taking his place will be Roddy Piper". Crowd goes nuts. He had been out of WWF for a while so I didn't know him real well. Came out in a Flames sweater and wrestled a great match.

Huge fan ever since.

Rest in peace Roddy. You made a lot of people happy.

WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper appeared on Rick Eisen’s DirecTV Audience Network talk show today (July 24), and during the interview segment, Piper was asked about the situation regarding Hulk Hogan and the controversy surrounding Hogan’s racist rant. Piper seemed to have gotten off track and made some very strange and bizarre comments in response.

Piper responded that he’s been fired by Vince McMahon five times, “It is an honor.” He then added that he is a family man and his son is his best friend. He then reportedly mentioned that he played bagpipes and placed fifth in the world.

"Natural causes". Right. It's perfectly natural to live the life of a wrestler the way they do.

Edit - thought I read natural causes, but I see it says cardiac arrest.

Piper has been pretty open about his steroid use.

It's shocking the rate at which these guys are dying now. I guess 60 is around the age where these things start to catch up with you.

The first bad guy who was devastatingly effective on the microphone.

Even after all the guys who tried to replicate his microphone abilities, he's still one of the top 5 bad guys all time in my opinion.

I don't know. I saw an interview and he said he didn't agree with what Hogan said but we are talking long time friends here and did you expect him to kick Hogan to the curb and step all over him?

Nope, but when you defend a good friend for making racist comments you should probably be prepared for the consequences.

I don't see where he defended the comments anywhere. That's the concept of friendship. You don't have to agree with what your friend says but are you supposed to turn your back on him when he's in a bad situation? You expect him to call out Hogan as the devil?

Piper just seemed really out of it when he did that interview. Some were speculating that he had early onset dementia.

I also don't really see where he defended the racist comments.

Randy died in a car crash. His death was extra sad because he is pretty much the only person to climb to the heights in the wrestling biz and get out with his health, sanity and dignity in check.

Unfortunately, they've gotten really good at making these.

IIRC he had a heart attack while driving and his death was NOT a result of the accident.

Dang it, you're right. That was a wiki article I could have gone without reading.

If you watch those two interviews from the link I originally posted it certainly did look like he wasn't functioning on a full deck of cards. Not surprising as those wrestlers especially in the 80's and 90's lived a hard life with the drugs, booze, steroids, and punishment to their bodies.

'Rowdy' Roddy Piper defended Hulk Hogan's racist rant before his death.

The wrestler, who passed away aged 61 on Friday, came to his former colleague's defence during an interview with TMZ in West Hollywood.

Asked by a reporter if he considered Hogan a racist, Roddy responded: "No, not the Hogan I know. No, he's not a racist at all. He hasn't got time to be one."

"There's no time to be racist, we're pro wrestlers."

I don't really see the big deal there, the Rock said something similar.
Quote:
“I’ve known Terry for a lot of years,” The Rock said, referring to Hogan’s real name, Terry Bollea. “And my dad helped train him in Florida in the ’70s, with my uncles.

“So I had not known the man to be racist,” he continued. “It’s funny, it’s one of those things where — and not justifying what he said — we’ve all talked trash, especially in private.”
Just wrestlers saying positive things about a friend.
