Wii will have 27 games for the launch or shortly thereafter. Zelda will be a launch title. Madden will be a launch title (from everything I've heard Madden for Wii sounds hella fun.) Even the multisports golf, tennis, fishing game looks great.

Heheh... the price is insane IMO. Unless their launch titles blow me away I'll be waiting it out.

I might end up just buying a PS2 for now until there's a price drop. $130 isnt that bad but $600-$700 is ######ed especially if the majority of my gaming is going to be on the PC.

to revive the thread....
From what I saw of the E3 coverage and the dissection of it afterwards on G4TV this is the summary I get:
-PS3 is the most powerful machine though that was known before.
-the launch lineup for the PS3 is not impressive and second generation 360 games will essentially blow them out of the water
-the price point is WAY too high and won't have the software titles to support it at launch time compared to the cheaper 360
-Microsoft will most likely have a $100 price drop on the 360
-new GTA game will launch on the 360 at the same time as the PS3.
-talk of Microsoft and Nintendo realizing they are going after different market shares (family/friend gaming vs mature games) may team up for the holiday season.
-cheaper version of the PS3 is essentially useless and forces people to buy the more expensive one. Total price tag once a second controller and a game or two are bought will be $1000 US.
-the game that stole the show was "Gears of War" for the 360. Hands down. It releases around the same time as the PS3. The "experts" feel that Gears is a title that will move consoles. They do not feel the PS3 has such a title until mid 2007 at the earliest.
-some of the games that made the biggest news at last years E3 for the PS3 were curiously absent this time around.
-third party developers DO NOT like the PS3. It takes twice as much work to build a game on the PS3 compared to the other platforms. This is due to the asymmetric cells that require different compilers and programming for each asymmetric set. They are seemingly loosing a lot of third party support. Any thrid party games will most likely be made on the 360 and ported over to the PS3 with little or no improvements.
-due to this asymmetric core John Carmack thinks Sony made a huge blunder because they will not have the third party support the other consoles have. Thinks that the Sony market share is going to be significantly reduced. (especially in markets outside of Japan from what I gather).
-only 2-3 million PS3 units worldwide available for launch. Experts predict that any shortages will seriously hurt Sony as people purchase the 360 and Wii instead. Other experts think the launch will occur with a big yawn. Either way not a good evaluation for Sony.
-the verdict was that Microsoft won E3 because Sony failed to really wow anyone and they came with Gears of War and the GTA bombshell. Nintendo was a close second and even won in some peoples mind as they generated excitement on the concentration of family and party gaming. Sony simply didn't do enough.
So now we wait and see what exactly happens over the next 18-24 months.

Add'l info:
Neither the PS3 nor the external HD-DVD for the 360 will ship with HDMI connectors. This means that once studios start shipping titles with the ICT (Image Constraint Token), neither of these machines will allow full HD to be displayed. (The 360's external HD-DVD will connect via a USB 2.0 connection)
Inital HD movies to be released (in either format) have announced that they will not enable the ICT. But there are rumours that the studios have a 'gentleman's agreement' with the hardware industry to not enable the ICT until 2010-2012 to spur sales of players to early adopters.
When the ICT is enabled, unless your TV is connected via HDMI video will be downgraded to 540p.

revive the old thread once again.
As noted in another thread I believe there is no EA NHL 07 for the PS3. There will be 2k7 but it looks no different than the 360 version and really I've been a 2k supporter the last 3/4 years and this years version looks subpar compared to EA. I'll go back to EA this year.
Another couple of blows for the PS3 came this week. An analyst looking at the necessary parts to make the PS3 says there is no way Sony can ship the 4 million they wanted to this year at launch. Instead look for 2 million worldwide and only 3 mil by March '07 (again half). It sent Sony stock down a few percent. But analysts are analysts and they all say somethign different.
The bigger news I think for the European launch is that microsoft has acquired a 12 month next-gen exclusive from both EA and Konami for Fifa 07 and Pro-evolution soccer (aka winning eleven). No footie for the PS3 until next October/November 2007 at the earliest (and assuming microsoft doesn't negotiate another exclusive).
PS3 doesn't look to have much to offer in the sports department the first year.

It's all lining up perfectly for the life-long Nintendo supporters like myself. The price, the market, the system- everything really. No EA NHL07 for PS3? That's ridiculous. Upwards of $1,000 price tag? That's absurd as well.
I've heard that Nintendo is making serious strides in trying to price their system at pretty much half of what the 360 was. And that's the way it should be- reasonable. 600 is even too high.
I've also heard that Nintendo is releasing a programming system so that entrepreneurial game makers can create games. If there's any truth to this (can anyone second this?) then the type of games coming out for the Wii are going to be unreal, as more creativity, more access, etc etc.
The one BAD thing about Nintendo, is that they take 9 years to come out with anything. So what's the point? They don't even have a release date set yet, as it will be announced next month. But they are ridiculously slow at this...

So is Microsoft. XNA Game Studio Express (Beta) is set to be released Aug.30 and provides a C# .Net framework to use XBox/Direct X libraries. Eventually, the Pro version of the tools will allow developers to sell their games in the XBox Live Arcade.
Sounds ambitious, but it could be neat to see what people come up with. Will people who develop Flash/Shockwave games switch to these new options?
And I am/was a big PS2 supporter, but it looks like Sony has made a system that is too difficult to develop for, laden with DRM, and really expensive. Perhaps I'll stick to PC Gaming (but I prefer my sports gaming on a consloe, and the 360 has been calling out to me).

Thats exactly it. I love playing the sports games on the console with a group of friends. I was going to wait for the PS3 but if they don't offer what I want till the next year what is the point (that assuming you can get one). I have been sucked into the 360 world and am planing on getting one.

I don't know much about the technical specs, but I do know that when I played my buddy's PS2 I thought it looked horrible. The XBOX was heads over Sony for me, so I bought one of those and then a 360 just last week.

I was a huge Nintendo fan right up until the last days of the n64, then I converted to PS2 and I was hooked. However, with the delays of the new system, the price tag, and the marginal differences its going to make over the 360, I can't see myself getting one, at least not for a few years. Besides, the first-generation models are always CRAP. PS2 had absolutely crappy machines, and only in the last year or two have they made them to the standard they should be.
I'm going to go with a Wii this time around, as I want a brand-new gaming experience but also with that old-school feel. I also like the fact that you can play every single previous Nintendo title through the Wii as well, making this console an essential tool for the old-school gamers (Hello Goldeneye again!)
Still, the PS3 will be the best selling console on the market in no time flat, regardless of what it churns out. People are too fanatical over video games these days, so there really isn't much worry for Sony to be operating at a loss for very long.
I still prefer PC gaming though, 10 times over.

Actually I really don't think so. I think with this generation the 360 will dominate the market. Fans of video games do have brand loyalty, but somewhere past $700 I believe brand loyalty is sincerely weakened.
I also wanted to note that people categorize system based on their target markets. But its not like Nintendo isn't going to have any games available that appeal to older audiences- (Resident Evil?). In fact really the only game that was a hit that Nintendo missed out on was GTA...

Thats exactly it - brand loyalty will sell millions of PS3 units, because people are always looking for the next big thing. Remember when PS2 came out? There were people lining up to pay hundreds, if not over a thousand dollars, to be the first ones to grab the system. In the modern game console age, prices tend to start high and work low, so the demand balances out the bottom line. Sony will realize new ways to produce the PS3 at a better cost, but until then, they will have people lining up to buy the PS3 simply because of it's popularity in previous generations. I remember when I thought shelling out $400 for a PS2 console was ridiculous; now it's par for the course to pay that high or higher, and I'm sure many avid consumers will see it that way too.
As for the console target markets, I don't think 'mature' titles really have anything to do with it anymore. Nintendo has pumped out some great games that people of all ages can love, such as Smash Bros and the Donkey Kong series. I think classifying target markets now revolves around the genre of the game, such as the Final Fantasy series and other similar titles. The PS3 will still be known best for its RPG titles, XBox for its first-persons and sports, and the Nintendo for their melee/adventure games. I don't think age really has anything to do with it anymore, it all depends on people's tastes.

This gen is really going to be interesting. At this point i'm still undecided, I want to see what the PS3 and Wii have to offer in comparison to 360, even though my loyalty somewhat lies with Microsoft because Xbox was so great. But at this point, I have less and less time to devote to games, and I'm sick of seeing the same ideas over and over again. So i'm really interested to see what Wii developers can come up with. I'm not interested in the Mario/Donkey Kong games at all, but if they can use their innovative controls in some more mature type games, with engaging story lines and gameplay, I will be sold.

Did you buy the 2 year extended warranty? If not, do it. My 360 crapped out on me and it's going to cost 150 bucks to repair or replace it.

Personally, I'm sold on innovation and creativity. Anyone who owns a Nintendo DS will probably vouch similarly. Games in my inventory like Wario Ware and Trauma Center make me very eager for the Wii.
It's true that Wii will be more family oriented. However, it looks like there will be some more mature games released for the Wii such as HAMMER and Red Steel. And hey for $250 (and approximately $40-$50/game), why not give it a shot?? I'm all about trying Wii Sports, Wii Music and Zelda right now!
In any case, I think the Sony Dynasty may be over this generation...

Screw warrenties. My first 360 has problems with the disk drive, I took it back and got one that hasn't had any issues at all. I also bought the 1 year Replacement plan, in a year I can step on it and get a new machine right on the spot.
Totally worth the $50 IMO. No need to worry about getting a refurbished machine, shipping it out, waiting for it to be returned, ect...

I'm getting a Wii for Zelda alone. It's hardly a next gen console though, it's a step up from Gamecube but graphically it's not a step up. But as you said, it's definetely a step up in terms of innovation.
Wii60, FTW
