960 says Montreal signed Semin to a one year contract at 1.1M.

A package around Drew Shore and a mid round pick for Chiasson?

Sens get a young cheap forward with upside, size and skill.

Flames get a middle 6 big body right shooting RW.

Only concern is Chiasson's cap hit going forward.

I don't think they would be interested in Shore and a mid round pick personally.

Thing is, does Chiasson bring more to the table than, say, Jooris, who is already being squeezed out of the lineup? If there is a difference it's probably not a very big one. Jooris also has the benefit of being able to play all 3 positions.

Devils put Zubrus on waivers to buy him out.

The 2nd buyout window was triggered 48 hours after the Devils settled with Larsson.

Zubrus is a 35+ year old contract, so his cap hit will still continue to count this season helping the Devils reach the salary floor.

The Devils save some actual money in buying him out now.

I don't want to start a thread for this question, so I will ask it here;
With Joni Ortio on a one way contract does this basicly guarentee him a NHL job? (Unless he's put on waivers) or can we start him in Stockton before the NHL season starts (without him going through waivers) and call him up during the NHL season and then decide A) to keep him on the NHL roster or B) put him on waivers in order to sent him back down to the AHL?

My understanding is No. We can't start him in Stockton without risking him to waivers. We want him in the AHL at any point, even the start, he must clear.

That said, I don't think that guarantees him a starting role with the Flames. I think it's a lot less likely than most think that Ortio will get picked up on Waivers if we place him there. Harder to do with goalies. You pick him up on waivers, and you have to keep in one of your two goalie spots, or carry 3 goalies all year. You really need to be sure to pick up a goalie on waivers IMO. Don't get me wrong, not saying it doesn't make me nervous or it's not a risk, I just don't think the Flames are looking at their options and coming to the foregone conclusion that Ortio will be picked up if they waive him.

I think the Flames trade one of the goalies in the preseason when some other team feels a need due to an injury or a planned backup not impressing them.

Really doubt we start the season with all 3.

3-goalie systems never work, and Ortio is too good to be in the AHL. In limited NHL action, I actually prefer him to Hiller and maybe even Ramo, albeit limited sample size.

I bet Hiller is moved before the end of the year.

Massive fail from Sweeney.
No way you can say where you think the kid would've gone had Boston not taken him. I had him as a sleeper and it seems likely he would've gone much higher than 45.

According to Treliving the player that the most teams were inquiring from the Flames about at the deadline was Drew Shore.

Apparently Franson was spotted on a plane going to Calgary.

Don't see how the Flames can fit him in capwise, but there you go. For all we know, he is coming to Calgary for non-hockey reasons.

Interesting.

He is a BC boy and if I remember correctly he still spends his summers in the BC interior.

The longer a free agent goes without a contract, the more likely they are to sign for less money. That's been the trend for a long time. I'm wondering if they can get Franson for around the $3M mark if they know Smid's career is done.

Interesting. Probably not going to happen, but

Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Franson
Russell - Wideman
Engelland

Trade Wideman sometime during the season(at the trade deadline)? hopefully move Raymond, Smid as well to fit him.

edit: apparently his brother plays for university of calgary?

I like Franson and on a one year value deal he makes sense for most teams. But you have to be confident you can move Wideman and his contract. Dennis Wideman can't be your 6th dman, can he? With Smid and Engelland earning $6.5 million in the press box? That doesn't add up.

More likely going to edmonton and couldn't get a direct flight. Or going to interior BC for the summer, and also no direct flight.

Too good to be true... that would make the Flames defence one of the better ones in the league. No one wants the bad contracts on this team, so I can't see how this would work.

Flames would have to dump Wideman or Engellend to make it work with Franson

Wideman out, assets in (either as part of a package, or futures), Franson signs. It would just be another shrewd move by Treliving, who is starting to build a reputation for himself as one heck of a GM.

Folks, Wideman has a no movement clause. It won't be as easy as just shipping him out.
