Well, in theory, because there are bigger picture issues that Conservative policies have either caused or been woefully inept at addressing.

You will be giving up a large portion of it next spring as it is considered taxable income and the Conservatives have cancelled the children's tax credits.

child tax credit was cancelled (where you claim your kids on your taxes) the child tax benefit which is the monthly benefit that went up for you was not cancelled.

I'm half joking, but not totally. I'm surprised you find it hard to understand how a few extra grand in my pocket every year will have more of an impact than big issues. A large majority of people will take the money every time.

Not surprised at all. It's been well documented that people will opt to take short-term gains over larger long-term gains.

The thing is that I take the money as well, but its a little bit disingenuous to say "here's a cheque" 6-8 weeks before the election and then come April I have to pay the vast majority back in taxes. I mean yeah, I would still cash the cheque, but lets not act like this is some great altruism on the part of the government either.

For me, the income splitting is something I've wanted for a long time, so that's what I'm fighting with. I really like the $2,000. Even if the UCCB is apparently pretty deceiving. And I kind of think that if the government isn't lining my pockets they'll just be lining someone else's, so why not mine? Yeah, I've probably gotten pretty disillusioned over the years, but I don't think that's any different than your average voter.

Funny, that article shows that high income earners will end up with very little benefit yet the Liberals (and Liberals on this board) like to say that the majority of the benefit goes to the richest Canadians. Listening to Trudeau I'd have believed that middle and low income people were getting nothing and the rich were using the money to light cigars with $100 bills.

The income-splitting seems like it really only serves people who don't actually need. I think even you would admit it's more of a want than a need. I guess it really comes down to priorities and privilege. For me, that $2000 wouldn't be enough for me to keep giving my vote to a party that refuses to do anything about climate change and continues to enact regressive social policies.

Haha, considering I've never once voted NDP, I must be running a pretty convincing con, eh? I'm 28 and unmarried. The major parties couldn't care less about my vote.
