You know, I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about hockey and I figured I knew pretty much every player in the league...but then I saw your list and sat there staring at "MacDonald $5.0" and I had no damn clue who that was.

Google tells me that the Philadelphia Flyers are paying $5 million to someone named Andrew MacDonald to play hockey for them. What a world.

The salary cap ceiling value is going to slow down with a sub 80 cent Canadian dollar against the US greenback though.

Purely my opinion, but if the CDN Dollar hovers around .75 for the next 3-5 years (and I think it will), I don't see the salary cap moving up from where it is today. If it does go up, I don't believe it'll be significant.

It wouldn't shock me if the cap were to drop a couple million next summer.

As long as they are not banking on an Oiler rebound. That would be foolish.

I think NBC has 7 years left & Rogers has 11 years left.

Not sure how your second sentence follows from the first. Most people considered Iggy's 7M a bargain and a hometown discount, where he could have gotten more elsewhere. Voracek was a Hart candidate the first half of the season, finishing 5th in league scoring. He's also a guy who's just hitting his stride.

We considered him the best player in the game at the time. And it was not a raise from his previous contract which was also 7/year. I have no idea how some teams managed to get under the cap who had payrolls of 50-90 mil but for the Flames that $39mil number was probably a raise from our total team payroll in 04.

A lot can happen in 8 years. Has there ever been a team that didn't end up regretting a deal as long as this one? Flyers are betting on a lot of things falling in their favour, continued offensive progression, injury-free career, cap going up, etc.

8 years is just too darn long.

Not sure why a few people are grousing or are shocked over the dollar value of the contract here.

Like it or not, anyone who puts up a PPG/year is going to get paid (even if it's his first time doing it). In Voracek's case, he is still a legitimately good player even notwithstanding his big season last year. He's easily the second best forward on the Flyers.

This is an ok deal considering that. Term might be kinda risky but dollar is very fair.

I think people are just following Chicago's lead. Lock up the stars and worry about the rest of the roster later.

The cap that year was made conservatively low to account for less than expected revenue. The lockout had just ended and they weren't sure what the damage was and they didn't want teams to be hurt the next year if the cap went down.

The Calgary Flames had no choice but to give him the 7m he wanted though. There was no way Iggy was taking a pay cut from his previous contract considering he was one of the top 5 players in hockey at the time.

Since then 9-12% of the cap is pretty standard for elite players. 12% is quite a bit for Vorachek considering he's only had one elite season. It does buy 8 years of UFA though so as long as JV can maintain his play from last season It should be a decent contract even if the cap doesn't rise substantially over the next few years. The key is he needs to replicate is career season and make it his new norm... I'm not sure he can do that but I guess we will see.

True, but on the other hand it's another guy that has so far only once put up numbers that justify that kind of salary.

Plus 8 years is a long time. Not a lot of players keep up high production for that long.

I agree that it's kind of the new normal, and that Voracek is probably going to be great for many years, but there's still a lot of risk involved.

I think people are overly sensitive nowadays to these big money deals because they are scared what Mony, Gaudreau and Bennett will cost the Flames (me included).

If we have a high priced Gio, it's going to be hard to sign all three to what they want I am assuming. Hopefully they all accept 6x6's and go on their merry way being hockey playing little boys.

It's a little frustrating how the locked out 12-13 NHL season is basically wiped from memory of everyone here, or just considered irrelevant because it wasn't 82 games.

Voracek was $8.25M good last year, but other than that he hasn't been. Huge gamble on Philly's part in my opinion.

Keep in mind I really like Voracek.

So this is buying years 27-34 for this player. I don't think teams should be giving 8 year terms to forwards this age...this one blows my mind. I really need to think about this.
