I read this was not even his first lion. If you already have that "trophy" going for a second one suggests extremely compulsive behaviour. Like hoarding.

New York magazine, the same issue with the Cosby victims, also has this article (does not seem available on-line):

Hunting Rebecca Francis
What is it about a pretty woman with a gun? Ricky Gervais’s giraffe-killing survivalist scapegoat has a thing or two to teach us about the wild. By Kerry Howley

Anyone who criticizes people who hunt and eat factory processed meat should shut their mouths.

I would say most people in this thread are criticizing killing for sport rather than killing for food.

The sad thing to me is this is one man, and one case. Obviously there were other kills attributed to this man. What bothers me is this is one guy who was caught. The amount of illegal poaching in Africa alone must be staggering.

I came across the carcass of a black bear once that had signs of being dragged by the neck and it's gallbladder removed. The incident was reported to conservation officers and basically it was shrugged off. It is hard to catch poachers in the act. How many get away with it daily is truly disturbing.

Its also sobering that this story exists only because this lion was famous enough to have a name. We would not be talking about this if the lion was nameless.

Maybe we should identify all the remaining lions on a 'Facebook for Lions'. Then, any poaching (and ?legal? hunting) will be visible under the light of social media.

Seriously, what if you just had drones and a web team, occasionally following the individual lions around and making a fun app out of it? Then all casualties would have infinitely more visibility and the hunters would have to account for that.

I've been wondering what the outcome of all of this will be. I can see Palmer and his family having to live the rest of their lives in another country in seclusion constantly on guard for genuine fear of their lives. Anyone think any differently? Do you think he will be extradited to face trial and jail time in Africa?

The palpable anger towards Palmer is now starting to cascade towards the censorship of Yelp who have deleted close to 8000 posts.

The internet mob mentality can be scary at times and I wouldn't be surprised if this snowballs into a boycotting of Yelp and the outcome being Yelp no longer exists by as soon as September.

I think people have way shorter memories than that. He'll have to hide out for a bit but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's business as usual six months from now. He's pretty much the most average looking dentist on the planet.

It was barely a year before people around here started buying houses in flood zones again.

For anyone defending this guy saying the internet has no right to ruin his life through shaming..... they aren't ruining his life. Dickless McBowhunter ruined his own life by illegally baiting, killing and trying to cover up the murder of a majestic, beautiful endangered animal.

He got caught, now he can deal with the public wrath of his horrid actions. There are 7 billion people on this earth, and approximately 30,000 lions, about the same as the population of Okotoks. This man is more worthless than a lion in every aspect, and people like him should be dealt with harshly and swiftly.

Robbing the earth of species, and the ability of future generations to enjoy them, transcends some dental hygienist losing a job, over the saying of a killer of the last of a handful of animals that have existed for over 800,000 years. If I found out this was my boss, I would take the high road anyway. Who wants to support and contribute to the success of a deplorable, human being like this. Anyone with a sense of morality or decency would walk out on this guy.

IMHO poaching endangered species 100% should be punishable by death. Rhinoceros poachers can be legally shot on site by park rangers, and I would have zero issue, if this would have been the outcome of this dentist. If penalties for poaching are not severe, a-holes like this will just do it, and bribe their way out of it, and fight to kill the last of each species kind.

Bottom line, humans are just disgusting filthy animals as well, like it or not. And if you go by the laws of supply and demand, this lions life is far more valuable, than the life of a human that is just another, parasitic, oxygen wasting, over consuming POS.

Killing an animal you are not going to eat is stupid, especially the way they baited it out of a national park. However, I find it interesting that what the animal looks like always plays such a big role when things like this happen

Yes, up until you made that point, no one was aware animals are killed for the meat we eat. Thank you.

You brought awareness alright. Just not about what you were hoping.
