He seems to have taken the approach that a coach just has to let him play his game and the offense will come just like junior and that's simply not going to happen. It didn't happen that way for better players like Steve Yzerman (Bowman was very hard on him in his early years) and it's not going to happen for Sven without learning the team game.
|
I agree with everything you are saying, except the Yzerman part. Bowman never coached Yzerman until late in his career. Yzerman walked out of junior scoring at a high pace but Detroit didn't win anything until Bowman came in and told Yzerman to play defence of he wouldn't play. Just a different cycle from Sven in my understanding.

Is there some reason why no forward on Calgary is getting more than 30 points next year? Maybe 1000 man games lost to injury or something? That's legitimately the only way I see that laughable prediction coming true.

Same rate, Sven never did anything for his personal development and his attitude sucked.

So Burke said he didn't play in all 3 zones. Big deal! It was true. Sven should have used that as motivation and proved him wrong. Instead he started sulking and apparently he still is.

Their moves have been stellar. No complaints from that side.
Still hate it whenever Burke talks.

Does anyone think that he would have signed with Calgary on the same deal? Or would the Flames offer that deal? Pretty reasonable, all things considered from a Canuck perspective, but I am not sure if that would even be possible here. Not trolling, but curious how he would be perceived coming into this year, if he was signed for one year on a one way deal.

No, he wouldn't have signed. Nor would the Flames have offered it. I think he also needed the comfort of a guaranteed roster spot, one-way paycheck or not. It's not written down, but I would bet good money he was told he'd start with the Canucks.

I don't think the flames offer him a one way. What's more, Sven was expecting one-way plus basically a guarantee of top 6 since "Sven can't perform in a bottom six role" whatever the hell that means.

means that his defensive confidence was shaken by the mean words of others, and top 6 don't have to play defense, hence that's my spot!

They've been talking about Sven a lot here in Vancouver (on Team 1040)... They're talking in terms on him being on the 2nd line...not that they're drastically over-rating him or assuming he's a lock, but it seems to be the expectation for him.

That was our hope not too long ago...can't say they're completely crazy to talk like that, but will learn that having him there won't help them, just like we did.

Yeah, he was always going to be a top 6 winger if he made the NHL full time, imo. Possibly a 3rd liner depending on what the team was going with for a 3rd (many now just go with 3 scoring lines and one checking).
I still don't think he has what it takes in terms of commitment to make it, even on a team like Vancouver, but I hope he does, just because we pass so much judgment on guys we don't know, but parenting is a huge part of who you are and it seems like his dad hasn't helped him since his pro career started in that regard.
Hopefully he looks inside himself and starts taking the criticism to heart and uses it as motivation. He's definitely got NHL level skills.

Didn't anyone in Vancouver see his play in the playoffs? The guy not surprisingly passive and invisible.

Why? He hardly does and when he does he's honest and knows his stuff. Under the tough persona he seems like a good person as well. I think we're lucky to have got him and as a result got Brad.

Baerstchi's biggest problem is that he has no tenacity in the offensive zone (or any other one for that matter). His hockey sense isn't superb either. He is easy to push off his game, 'new attitude' or no.
It makes sense that he's on the Canucks now because he actually embodies everything that's wrong with that team. Skill with no heart.

Arguably Baertschi's best trait. He might be small, slow, soft, and have low intensity, but hockey sense definitely is not a weakness of his.

Agree. Sven's a pretty smart hockey player, with good vision. To be even slightly effective he'd need a finisher though, which Van doesn't have (assuming Vrbata plays top line).
Whatever the case, he's made of paper - gets knocked off the puck if you blow on him too hard. Good luck to him.
