If he does return to the Kings (or the NHL at all), it will be interesting to see what kind of backlash they face.
The court of public opinion has become extremely powerful in recent years for these sorts of situations.

If I was a player on the Kings I wouldn't want to have a convicted wife beater as a teammate. I think the organization would be better off if they just severed all ties

Can they legally do so?

They could buy him out, trade him, demote him to the minors... But I don't know if they could terminate his contract over it.

with LAs defensive depth, they need Voyonov. He'll be back and playing.
Does it become a distraction/locker room issue? Who can say?

The precedent that would set would be enormous. No way would the union allow that especially right after Richards.

No kidding! Athletes having their contracts terminated after committing a felony? There'd be no one left, professional sports leagues would have to fold.

Why would the union not allow a trade or buy out? A team has every right to legally move a player out. They would most certainly get hosed on a deal, but that's besides the point.
If LA out of nowhere said, Slava we are firing you because of your criminal activity, I assume there would be repercussions for that though. If a guys serves his time, he serves his time. You can't really not employ a guy after that; there's laws for that (I think).

From the Standard Player's Contract...

I'd think the Kings and the League could pretty safely argue that a domestic assault conviction would qualify as "conduct detrimental to the best interest of the Club, the League or professional hockey generally".

Yeah I'm sure that they have grounds to terminate the contract. Doubt they will though.

By Mike Richards' standards they have more than enough to terminate the contract.
However, Voynov is still a proven top 4 NHL defenceman that has value in the league from pure hockey perspective.
That is why the Kings will not terminate the contract.

Celebrated Square Root Day

If he does play, I would seriously be interested in watching their player introductions at the Home Opener. I'm willing to bet you'd hear a pretty audible chorus of boos.
Even if it's only a few dozen people, I'd bet you'd hear something.

They did with Richards. Of course, Richards isn't a good player anymore.

There ARE laws for that. They allow employers to fire an employee for being a convicted felon.
