Some conflicting reports on the 3rd:
Blake Price @BlakePriceTSN
The 3rd rounder from PIT is whatever ends up being the better of the two 3rd round picks from PIT, either VAN or NYI's original picks

Bonino 31 hits in 75 games, qualifies him as one of the 4 small players on a team. With the 2 Sedins and Vrbata that put them at the limit. add Vey and it was an accomplishment that the Canucks made the playoffs last year.
They were the weakest team in the playoffs.... and it really showed in the first round
Sort of like the Tanguay for David Jones trade... Tanguay was the better player but too soft to have on a soft team.

Pittsburgh IMO won this trade. Sutter's not as good as he was before and Bonino is going to get better.

Excellent! So...
Sedin (35 this year)
Horvat
Sutter
??
for the next 3 years.
Not good enough to win anything, but possibly good enough to ensure that they aren't picking early enough to get that #1 C prospect that they so desperately need.

I don't mind Sutter as a 3rd line center but I just don't think the offense will ever come.
Just hope that Vancouver overpays to keep him now, come on contract over $5 million per year.

And Horvat will likely become a solid #2, but he is also light on the offensive side. More of a 2/3.
And the Sedins are 35 this year. They are going to have a hell of a time scoring goals.

Sutter isn't much of a banger either. Had 86 hits last year, and 69 the year before.
Penguins replace any physicality they lost by adding Fehr who had 84 hits last year.
Canucks really don't get that much tougher IMO and Bonino actually might not be much of a downgrade defensively either.

It would have been like Trading Tanguay for Jones, but us giving them a 2nd and Wotherspoon as well.

wow, just listening to Benning on Vancouver radio and he is trying to extend him this summer and thinks it will happen within a few days/a week.
I am thinking big payday for Sutter coming up. $6m/6 years? I wonder what those Can'tucks fans will think of that payday.

Rutherford: So we need to sign Fehr to a new deal, and we are against the cap. We don't want to lose depth since we are going for the cup. Any suggestions on who to trade without messing up the team?
Bill Guerin: You probably will have to trade a guy like Sutter away, but who in their right mind would give you a good deal on that without taking advantage of our situation?
Rutherford: I know just the guy!
*Calls Benning on Auto-Dial
Bill Guerin: Can you ask him to throw in a 2nd while you are at it? I've seen it work before and it was hillarious!
Ruterford:

Excellent. Those pieces must cost, what, $5M+?

In fairness, you could probably do a similar comparison with many teams entering a rebuild. With the Flames, for example:
Iginla, Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Regehr, Tanguay = Jones, Stajan, Poirier, Byron, Agostino, Klimchuk, Smith
Different circumstances of course, but generally the team tearing it down and starting over should expect to get hosed.

I think this trade was just Rutherford and Benning battling it out for worst GM in the league and it looks like Benning handily won the title.

Just because Feaster got a pretty bad return for those assets, doesn't mean Gillis/Benning didn't also do a poor job.

I think the difference for me is that the Canucks have now traded Lou, Schneider and Lack....3 guys that could have all potentially been their starter. Now they're going into the season with Miller and Markstrom. At least they got Horvat out of it, but the Lack and Loungo deals were pretty bad.

Not only did Pittsburgh win this trade, they destroyed it.

I came to say the same thing.
The Canucks are betting big that Sutter has some huge upside because while they acquired (IMO) the better player, the difference is marginal, the pay and term are significant and they gave up a promising prospect and the higher pick.
