Someone in the leafs office watched Moneyball. Then they saw some young kid who is a good bean counter, so they hired him to be just like the movie thinking a young kid who knows "enhanced stats" will win them the Cup.

Obviously the leafs are hoping to make a Moneyball 2.0 and have the leafs brand all over it.

Hard to say if Dubas really has rose. The Toronto-media factor really is at play with all Toronto-based employees.

He's young, knows generally what he's doing, probably personable/likely willing to glad hand with local reporters, and enough of the change of pace/attitude from the other guys that won't give the media the time of day and thus those in the media steer clear from. So, the media like him and push him as such and then that snowballs into something more than it really should be.

Recall the glowing reviews the Eakins got as coach of the Marlies, and speculation as to how quickly he will become a coach in the NHL, and maybe of the Leafs. Same sort of idea...he was just a change from what the local press in Toronto were used to when it came to coaches in his attitude and ideas, and in Toronto, if you're doing something different, and are personable, compared the the old stuck ups in the Leafs upper chambers that usually crap on the press, you're tagged an up and comer automatically, even if the skills or experience aren't there.

Lowe bit on all that Eakins hype hook line and sinker. Dubas could probably sit around and fetch Lou's coffee and get his car detailed all day for the next couple years, do nothing hockey related except feed the media enough to keep them to like him, and likely get a job offer from a desperate team in a couple years, believing the same hype that's been largely artificially created.

Problem with Dubas is he's too young to not get taken advantage of. It's one thing to get ripped off by an old guy, but in a group of older established men, nobody wants to get had by a young punk - especially that he's on the Leafs. He's still part of the old boys club (I forgot if it was his dad or grandfather who was a prominent junior hockey guy), but his age will not allow him to be an effective GM until he's at least 40.

Dubas has a solid resume for a young guy. But he is also the poster boy for the flavour-of-the-day possession crowd.

We shall see how things play out, but so far, despite all the hype (and arrogance) no one has shown any ability to parlay possession numbers into an improved on-ice product.

And that is a bit of an elephant-in-the-room for the possession crowd.

The only particularly impressive thing about Dubas' resume is his age. If he had done an average job running the greyhounds when he was 34, and became a leafs agm at 40, no one would care.

I find it odd to say he is the best up and comer in hockey because no one really knows what this guy does. He's an AGM. I could say Craig Conroy and Brad Pascall are the best up and coming execs in the league, but I'd be talking out of my ass because I'm not in the circles that know what agms do around the league.

The main reason the Leafs signed Dubas is he was about to be scopped-up by other teams. They weren't the only organization impressed with him.

The situation in Toronto puzzles me. They hire Shanahan as President supposedly for him to hire and oversee a young GM much like in Calgary. Shanahan than hires an Asst. GM who is too young to yet take on the GM responsibilities so he hires an old man in Lamoriello to take the reins for a few years. Meanwhile they've hired maybe the best coach in hockey who's going to run the team and he's given input on trades and other movements.

This doesn't take into consideration that Lamoriello is use to running a team with an iron fist while insisting that the team plays the trap. How this is going to work out between coach and GM will be interesting but it looks to me like there are too many cooks in the kitchen.

Babcock has strong opinions on how he's going to run his team. Lou is also not a pushover. Then you have Shanny & Dubas in the wings.

Too many high priced cooks is also my diagnosis.

It's the solution for the on ice product. Show the fans we're paying a ton of money (ie. doing everything we can) to make the team better.

It's the front office version of the Oilers. And you're probably right, it'll end up about as well as it does up North.
