Byron is a great utility player who can move in and out of the line-up. And he plays like a big man so his size hasn't been a big concern. Remember he did take out Shea Weber..
I like the philosophy of not losing assets with value, even if it's not a lot of value. He can be traded at the deadline and even if it's for a 5th round pick that's still better than not re-signing. Or if having Byron on the team helps free up a package trade deal than it still works out.
Worth keeping him for this alone!
That's horrible and you should feel bad.

Byron is a useful player, but one who I expect will see a fair bit of the press gallery this year. It's good to be in a position where a guy with his skills is a possible healthy scratch.
The handless horseman rides again! I like Byron's work ethic, speed and tenacity but truly hope he either learns to finish breakaways...or passes to a trailer.

Its kind of funny he was so snakebitten on breakaways this year because that's what he really excelled at previously. Hopefully it was just an aberration as he could be a potentially lethal 4th liner for us if he can finish a bit more often on those chances given how many he creates.

He had wrist surgery at the end of the season as did Jooris and Colborne. It might have been something bothering him all year. Maybe next season all three throw down 20 goal seasons
Okay, I'll be happy with 20 shots on goal from colborne.

If Paul Byron can shake off the stone hands syndrome he had last year he will be a massive steal at 900k. I swear he could have easily had 20-25 goals last year on break aways alone.
Training camp is going to be cut throat with the sheer amount of numbers the Flames are going to roll in with at all positions.
Myself, I really see no room for Byron but camp will determine everyones fate.
Ferland is next and I hope it's a 2-3 year deal for him.

you hit the nail on the head.
If he pots on his chances he'll be a steal.
if he doesn't, he'll have a tough time cracking the lineup.
The contract is fair for this reason.

His possession stats are pretty impressive, and the team was not as good when he was injured (the PK was a lot less dangerous). IMO his scoring issues are all mental. If he ever cracks the scoring jinx, particularly on breakaways which he is a master of obtaining, then I think he would be a heck of 4th line and PK player.

Really like having him around. Worst case he gets beaten out at training camp and is waived. Someone picks him up or he plays in Stockton. No real impact on cap.
Better case, which I believe is possible is that he shows more goal scoring ability this year and gets lots of playing time.
I think Byron is a great utility player. Good on the PK, and his versatility makes him valuable in his spot. I can't think of a better 13th forward at the moment. Though he could continue to develop and get better, he is more or less a finished product. You don't want a prospect sitting - a young up and coming prospect either plays in the AHL, or plays in the NHL - you don't have said prospect sitting outside of a couple of games now and then as a teaching tool.
Byron helps give this team very good speed, he is good on the PK, though he is undersized, he does play with some grit, and he can legitimately play on every line from the 1st down to the 4th as needed without detracting from the line. I mean, though you obviously don't want him to be a mainstay on the top line, he won't kill that line's offense as he can keep up and make plays. He can play on the 4th line as an energy player. He also puts out 100% all-out efforts on every shift.
As a guy who was really disappointed with Byron joining the Flames, and thinking he may never be an NHL'er, I really am glad that he is on the Flames and I think he makes a solid contribution to the team.
Remember when Baertschi was playing lazy without that hustle? I think Baertschi only looked good for a couple of games with the Flames last year, and it was with Byron (and Jooris - another non-stop motor). This type of play is infectious, and I am glad that he is signed to keep infecting the Flames.
Also, snakebitten or not - him not capitalizing on breakaways is a minor issue. Him putting himself into good positions by reading the play well and using his blazing speed to get a breakaway is huge for the Flames. Puts the other team on their heels.

I would rather see Byron on the team than either Bollig or Raymond. He contributes the most of those three at both ends of the ice, so if the Flames are in a roster crunch, I would rather they move out those two guys than Byron.
