Who Wears the "A" & "C" Next?

If Gio leaves after this season I would be hesitant to give Monahan the "C" already, even though giving it to your young star with leadership abilities seems to be the common trend (Crosby, Toews, Landeskog... etc), but my guess is we do give it to him despite my reservations.

I think Bouma is an ideal candidate for a letter in the near future. He would be my choice for an "A" if Hudler or Wideman leaves.

Should all 3 leave I would think Backlund and Russell would be natural candidates as well.

Long term:
C: Bennett
A: Monahan, Hamilton

Bouma with an A would get my vote. Monahan, Brodie, and Hamilton would be my near term options for C and the remaining A's. Bennett may eventually make captain, but his age conspires against him with good candidates only a few years older but having valuable professional experience. Once Monahan is made captain (theoretically), the only way to give it to Bennett is to trade Mony, which from an organizational perspective would be sad to lose an elite center.

We burned a year on his ELC and he played the entire 2 rounds of the playoffs for us. He's made the team.

My assumption is your saying this would be longer term correct? There is no chance they give Bennett an A ahead of Bouma or Russell.

Ya, I think that happens after Gio's next contract. I think Gio will stay the captain for the next 4-5 years. That's what I think will be the leader group after that.

While Gio is captain, I think we'll see Monahan move up and get an A though. I just meant that those three players were the next ones. Monahan, Brodie, Bennett, Hamilton.

This I like and can see this happening. The only change in the future that I could see is Bennett being the C and Monahan with an A, but hard to say right now especially if we have Gio around for 3 to 5 more years.

If Gio is gone after this season I'd give it to another veteran like Russell, and eventually to Bennett. I have a feeling he'll be the guy. Monahan and Brodie will be solid assistants long term.

Gio won't be gone though.

Obviously it's impossible to say who is best Captain material as fans. But what the heck, it's fun.

C-Monahan if Gio trade/walks. (side note: Fire Treliving if Gio walks for nothing LOL).

Honorable mention for C - Brodie. I want to say Bennett, but he's only played 12 games in the NHL.

A - Definite Brodie if not C. He seems like quiet leader so may not be the best C material.
A- Bouma. The kind of guy who guys can't help but be inspired by. The kind of guy to do the right things when the chips are down.

Honorable mention for A - Hudler depending on what happens to his deal. Russell also if he stays. I love Wideman and hope he stays another 5 years, but I envision him leaving very soon.

I think Monahan is the future captain of the Calgary Flames, with Brodie and Bennett as assistants.

Other contenders for the As if they're still around: Backlund, Bouma, Hamilton, and Russell.

Maybe the NHL should just change what the "A" stands for from Alternate to Assistant since that's what almost everyone (including the guys who wear the letters in the NHL) thinks it stands for now.

I think it would be funny for them to be Assistant Captains. Giordano goes to talk to the referee and one of them saunters up and starts recording the interaction using a typewriter...

Depending on what crowd of people I'm talking to, I use assistant captain or alternate captain. Admittedly, I grew up calling them assistants.

Note to self: call them alternate around Squiggs to avoid looking like a noob.
