Obviously, each team needs to pay some players more and some players less. Getting Lance signed for ~$1M below that average for the next few years seems to add-up in my mind.
|
Problem is that the elite teams usually have the top 4-6 players eating up about 1/2 of that cap space. Look at the Hawks, Toews, Kane, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook and Crawford take up 43.6M (Keith and Hossa have stupid low cap hits). That leaves about 1.6M average for the rest of the team.

They'll be making toast with the good bread in the Bouma-Monahan house next year.

Your also taking Toews and Kanes new contracts not their old. You can make a case Chicago's run ended after this past cup and the new less favourable contracts start to kick in.
Bickell isn't alot better than Bouma and he makes 4. Bouma at 2.2 million is a steal

Over 4 years it is. 2.2 for 3 is very good

him electing arbitration makes me annoyed that we even QO'd Byron in the first place.

Yea, I don't even know what Byron could be asking for? If the team is offering him a one way contract he should sign it and be happy.

he will get more from the arb and the team can't walk away at the rate he is gonna get...in the end he will get more money and that is his agents job

Despite an injury-plagued year Byron was 16th on the team in time on ice last season. Ahead of Matt Stajan and Brandon Bollig who played more games.
His average time on ice last season was ahead of Deryk Engelland, Lance Bouma, David Jones, and Matt Stajan among others.
He was not healthy scratched once in the 2014-15 season.
He is one of the best shot suppressors on the entire team, while playing highly defensive 5vs5 minutes and penalty kill.
Yet you're annoyed he got a qualifying offer.
Okay, there. The guy is practically Hartley's favorite role player.

You don't get ice time if you're not earning it. Or punching faces. And Byron doesn't punch faces.

Mason Raymond played almost 15 minutes per game.

Ok. I'm hoping people produce with ice time, he doesn't. But if you like him, that's fine.
He's just "a guy" in my opinion.

Bickell's contract is a boat anchor, if Chi could have got rid of it I'm sure they would have by now.

he shows moments of 'awesome'....with zero follow through.
I just keep hoping that one day things are just going to click and he'll light it up.
I'm still waiting and hoping...

I like watching Lord Byron play, he's like mosquito that just won't let you relax for one second. So annoying and crappy to play against. Hope he continues to be with the team in a utility/13th forward role.

He was on pace for 27 points, which is perfectly fine for a bottom 6 forward who's getting buried in the defensive zone. Ferland, Playoffs+Regular season would be on pace for 23 points.
I guess we shouldn't have qualified Ferland either.
Byron wins puck battles and he's able to carry the puck through the zone, something most of the Flames are terrible at. He brings a balance you need just like Bouma, Ferland, Backlund, Jones do. You wanna talk about "just a guy" you need to start looking at a few guys who might have some height over Byron but are really just redundant... Colborne, Stajan, Bollig, Raymond.

Damn, you really took that personally.
I'm annoyed because he went to arbitration for basically having a motor with no production. This makes me wish we didn't even bother to qualify him
Byron is just another guy on this team and we'd be fine without him.
The existence of others who aren't awesome doesn't make Byron awesome.

Ferland is a rookie that was unbelievable in the playoffs. Byron is a guy who's just there.

So fascinating how people nickle and dime minor players but will cheer on a huge contract for a perceived star.
