Default Calgary West riding - What is going on?

Quote:
...no reason has been given as to why the former Conservative riding president for Calgary West has been disqualified in his bid to challenge four-term incumbent Rob Anders for the riding nomination.

So is Anders going to get another free pass?

And it sounds like other party workers are questioning the process as well.

Quote:
A former party worker said keeping information bottled up is damaging to the party's credibility.

"To take someone who was good enough to be a riding president and disqualify them, well, something's not right," said Stephen Carter, who handled communications for all Alberta Conservative candidates in the last federal election.

Carter said the party looks "hidden and deceitful" - a bizarre move at a time when public opinion polls suggest many Canadians feel the minority Tory government is performing well.

"The reality is the party is not answering questions to party members. The party is not answering (any) questions. They are abdicating responsibility," he said.
Edit:Here's the same story, but a Canada.com link.

Although I don't support his party, I'm thinking of running myself just to get that clown Anders out of Ottawa. I'm embarrassed that he is my MP.

Looks like it's not just related to Calgary West, though that is the most prominent riding I'd say.. but the Conservative's don't seem to want change to be allowed. That seems like pretty tough circumstances to even have the chance to run.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was rejected for missing a dot above an i or something.

Wrong. Something is in the works here. Anders most likely won't be here for the next Federal election. Most Conservatives want him out just as badly as anybody else.

Who's going to run against him?

All I hear is rumours, but if there is anyone in the Conservative caucus that is disliked by the PMO, it's Rob Anders.

The Conservatives could run a rabbit with a pancake on its head and still win in Calgary.

At least it would be better than Rob Anders.

That gets said every time, but no one seems to be able to run against him for the Conservative party representative.

I attended U of C at the same time, in the same faculty, as Anders.

I couldn't stand him then, can't stand him now. He needs to be pushed out.

What's disturbing is that his party has all but ensured his re-nomination with their tactics.

I won't be voting for the party as long as Anders is associated with them.

Well that's exactly the reason why he keeps running and winning. The Conservatives feel that we'll put anything into office, so why bother actually trying?

No I mean that whenever people run against him.. the damn constituency doesn't support that other person. I think it's a case of "we don't care enough to change" attitude. In that I guess I disagree with peter12. Anders is an asshat and everyone, including the party knows it. If they really wanted to do something about it I don't see how it could be so hard, because as you said.. a pig with a pancake on it's head rolling around in **** could win.

I'm not sure that's possible. The Conservative party changed the nomination rules, and the deadline is almost past.

From the article linked:
Quote:
Wakula and other challengers to Conservative MPs have expressed frustration with a change in party policy earlier this month that required nomination meetings be held before Parliament resumes Sept. 18.

In some cases, would-be rivals had only days to complete a major questionnaire, post bonds and have a police background check.

The hatred of the Liberals runs deep in Calgary. People still haven't forgiven the Liberals for the NEP.

If they thought that anyone put up would automatically get in, why don't they throw any old candidate up there? If they're not happy with Anders, which I can't see how they would be, what would they lose with replacing him? There has to be some kind of fear that they feel... it only makes sense.

With their recent track record, and quotes from Ignatief(sp?) saying gas taxes should increase, I don't blame them one bit.

Nah, that would take effort. No real point. Anders gets elected, no reason to risk trying someone new.

I actually toyed with the idea of running for the riding nomination, but I have no clue how the whole process works.

There are other things besides the NEP, but yes, that is probably the major turning point.
