Default How to get puppies?

I'm a bit confused.

We want to get a puppy, preferably something along the lines of a lab mix. I looked through the rescue societies and they are hit and miss, very much on the miss, I can't seem to get an application on them in fast enough.

What about purchasing? I go to kijiji and see the following:
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-dogs-puppies/...ies/1061362166

How do I know that this isn't a breeder (in the bad way) versus a breeder (in the good way). Or perhaps it's someone shilling for the bad one?

Also, if I decide to get one of those, is it bad form for me to ask to take the puppy to my own vet?

Thanks for any advice,
ers

We applied for a puppy through AARCs and like you, were too slow. So we asked that we be alerted when something came in that fit what we were looking for (we needed something kind of specific). The adoption co-ordinator then emailed us when a new dog came in. We wound up adopting through these guys http://pause4change.com/pages/adoption before something came in through AARCS.

I would presume that every listing on kijiji is running a puppy mill.

Do not buy a puppy from Kijiji. There are plenty of lab rescues in need of a home. Petfinder.com links a bunch of the rescue organizations and you can put in any specific criteria you want from age, color or good with cats. I did a search for Labs in the Calgary area:

I also tried to go through AARC at first and it was too slow. I found www.pawsitivematch.org, and landed a beautiful pup right away, from a litter of 9. They were much easier to deal with IMO. I would really recommend exhausting all adoption avenues before buying one.

I adopted from ARF a few years ago, great process and I got a pretty great dog from them. They are pretty thorough with the interview process, and let you have a day with the dog at home before deciding.
They also bring the dogs to Petsmart across from Chinook every Saturday afternoon.

There is also Misty Creek Dog Rescue, we got our shepherd/collie mix pup there. Nice to deal with as well.

We got in early and actually were able to go to the first vet visit for the puppies when we bought our boys 10 years ago.

It was an awesome experience and agree that legit breeders should not have a problem with this.

Pawsitive Match just got a bunch of puppies that they will be listing for adoption soon. Not 100% sure on the breed but contact them and you could start the application process.

I got my pup through them and they were simply amazing.

We almost went the route of getting a dog from a breeder, until we realised that there is huge amounts of inbreeding going on. Do all dogs a favour, and adopt one from a shelter.

Well, after posting, I was told unequivocally that a breeder was out of the question. We're waiting for a rescue shelter to have what we are after.
