A travesty ×12. The Forever a Flame should be for 2nd tier Flames key players but the legends like Iggy should be retired and also honored as Forever a Flame.

I hope soon. Basically every other Canadian team is lapping us in terms of honouring history.

LOL?

Montreal & Toronto have eons of history.
The city of Edmonton has been living in the 8th decade of the 20th century for about 30 years now.

But,
Winnipeg? LOL
Vancouver? Also LOL

Yes, Vancouver. https://postmediacanadadotcom.files....2_29011061.jpg

Try and keep up, I'm not saying they've accomplished more, I'm saying they honour it better. Flames could have more jerseys retired, and more 'Forever A Flame' banners on the ceiling. I remember going to the Dome as a little kid during the 'Young Guns' era and thinking Lanny was literally the only decent player we ever had.

Obviously I'm not talking about the Jets or Sens.
LOL + ? isn't a thing. It has no meaning.

It was never out of circulation (we'll see if anyone is given it this year). Obviously, it was never treated with the same reverence by the team.

As far as I'm concerned, the Sens should put Joe Malone from the Sens 1.0 in the rafters. Ditto Winnipeg with Hull and Steen. It doesn't matter if it's the "same" franchise. Emotionally the history belongs to the fans in a certain city, not to the franchise. Ice Arizona correctly recognized that Hull and Steen mean nothing to either of the fans in Arizona. They mean the world to the fans in the 'Peg, though.

My point exactly. FAF is a lesser honour than retirement. It's not the same.

The strangest retirement ceremony was when the Coyotes retired Hawerchuk's number.

I don't know why anyone thought that was a good idea.

Thanks for sharing the video. So full of irony. His name on a jersey he never wore, the unenthusiastic fans trying to sound like they're cheering, Gretzky's bored beyond belief expression and the one guy who had the sense to wear a Jets sweater. Probably an expat from the 'Peg.

That being said, #10 needs to go into the rafters @ MTS Centre as well.

I have to agree with the sentiment that Forever a Flame shouldn't be used as a replacement for # retirements. For guys like Iggy and Kipper who deserve to be honoured, do it right and retire the #s. For others, 2nd tier players, as you say, who deserve to be honoured, do the Forever a Flame junk.

The Flames should start winning some more Stanley Cups if y'all want numbers in the rafters.

Really.

Honoured Members (AKA Forever a Flame) will suffice in the meantime.

My bad. I was thinking of Frank McGee. It's been a while since I read about the early history of the league. Sprague Cleghorn would also be a good candidate. There were a boatload of HOF players on those teams.

#14 is retired already. By the Calgary Vipers. For Theo Fleury, that's good enough. He wasn't even the best Flame to wear 14.

As far as #34 goes, retire Mikka Kiprusoff. Forever a Flame Jamie Macoun.

Same thing with 12. Retire Iginla, Forever a Flame Loooooooob.

I heard Edmonton has already pre-emptively retired #97 following his soon to be legendary career.

You missed the point.

25 was never out of circulation. Ever. Bollig was the ninth player to wear it after Nieuwendyk. Nobody has worn 14 after Fleury, and nobody will wear 12 after Iginla. Those numbers are gone and retired.

The tiers are there - retirement and honouring - only hidden. FAF is just what they call the ceremony. Though I expect Iginla is going to force the team into making those tiers explicit when his time comes.

To answer your earlier question, the way Nieuwendyk left was, by itself, why the Flames shouldn't retire 25, and Vernon belongs in the HHOF.
