No but seriously talking about the guy like he's a typical 60th overall pick is nonsensical. He has all the talent in the world and picking him in the top 20 would have been perfectly defensible. He's also been playing regular minutes in a pro hockey league for two years. The idea that he might get into a game early season is still unlikely (given that he does need to get stronger), but by no means absurd.

People SHOULD be excited. Boom or bust? Sure. But boom is a realistic possibility.
Agreed. It's a lot easier to teach a prospect defensive positioning than it is to teach excellent skating, stickhandling , passing and shooting.

Tell that to Taylor Hall. Teaching the teachable aspects of the game requires a willingness to learn, which requires humility.

To be clear, I'm making zero judgments about OK with this post. You can't teach skill, true. But you can't teach anything to someone who doesn't want to learn.

Taylor Hall is a stump, failed to get his pleasure craft license 3 times(didn't think that was possible) so it's not just willingness.. It's lack of brains.

No argument here. None of Edmonton's top forwards play defence. I think this is mostly a coaching issue. There's no way Kylington would play for Bob Hartley if he was unwilling to learn the Flames' defensive systems.

IMO this ELC is all about getting Oliver in NA ASAP. Sweden just isn't working out for him as per Loob's comments and if OK's only options were playing with the Flames or going back to Sweden, and the Flames new he wasn't NHL ready, then why bother signing him to an ELC?

Playing top pairing minutes with Ivan Provorov in Brandon seems too good to pass up IMO.

What's exciting to me - and I'm sure it's been mentioned - is that the Flames' prospect cupboard is so stocked with quality players that they can take a small risk on a seemingly very high reward pick. I think it's great that Treliving and company felt confident in making such a pick. Much better than the days of no 2nd round picks with Sutter.

The fact that he is also a widely known dbag to people makes him a perfect fit for the Oilers.

He's really quite a nice guy. A little awkward at times if anything.

^In my experiences he's quite the dbag. Him and Eberle and a couple other Oilers used to stop by my restaurant all the time and knowing Eberle from high school he'd always say hi if I was out of the kitchen. Hall, every time, would scoff at first and never look up from his phone. Treated my wait staff like garbage, if it was a female server he'd talk down to her and try to get her number immediately, if it was a male server he'd just treat him like crap.

Used to date a girl from Edmonton who's had him hit on her friends and bars and it was a similar story. Just a rude guy

This is widely known? I've seen him out many times. He was quite nice to anyone I have seen talk to him out and about Edmonton.

Not really what you're asking for, but still interesting.

Were you not a Flames fan during Phaneuf's tenure? Because despite ample opportunity, mentoring, and coaching he just never learned to read a play or position himself effectively.

Yes, I was. I think there's a difference in their situations. OK was playing against men at 16 due to his offensive prowess. I'm guessing he missed a developmental stage defencemen usually go through in learning to play without the puck. It's possible he'll be unable to learn it but there's no evidence at this point to support that view. One might as well say that you should get rid of all your draft picks who are not NHL ready as they won't learn to round out their game.

How long ago was that? I think it is different now and everything goes through Transport Canada or one of their select accredited facilities.

While I didn't find it difficult, I did have to read through all the material beforehand. There were many things that I wouldn't have known (like how many of what types of flares you need when you are "x" kilometers from shore. Or how many types of life saving devices you need on boats of different lengths. I also didn't know all the different warning flags and nautical terms (like gunwale, transom or freeboard). Or when and why to use certain types of anchors. What radio frequencies to use in emergencies or non-emergencies. There was actually quite a bit to it and I was surprised.

Having said that, I got 96% on my first try. But I definitely had to prepare.
