People say that, but every single player on the ice these days I a much better hockey player and much closer on level to the best players than the average NHL 3rd liner was in the 80s when the league was 21 teams.

So far, you've not shown any evidence of any coorelation. Seems more like the rise is consistent with the changes in NHL revenues.

I'm supposed to believe that there is no one in Southern Ontario willing to pay Bettman a billion for an NHL expansion team? Bettman is full of you know what.

Might be willing to pay a billion total, but the first few hundred million would probably have to go to MLSE, and the sabres would want a big payout. Then you build a new rink, and you're right around the same 500 MM.

I don't know why you would believe that given the quoted tweet said absolutely nothing of the sort.

Didn't Seattle shoot down an arena without at least an NBA team?

The NBA is obviously the clear end goal, but they've waffled on the NHL at times, likely on the argument that building an arena now for the NHL would increase the odds of the NBA later.

I'm missing the link but didn't Gary Bettman recently state there is nothing on paper that says Toronto or Buffalo are entitled to any form of compensation?

If that's true, then there's 28 other owners who would like to get their $30+ each from a Toronto 2 expansion team. That plus $15 MM from vegas and Murray's got the downpayment on a new arena.

He said there is nothing that the Leafs could do to prevent another team from entering the Toronto market. But there is ample precedence for the Leafs getting compensated. The Devils paid the Rangers and Isles, and the Ducks paid the Kings when they arrived.

The deal that the City Council approved for the construction of the arena was contingent upon them being awarded an NBA franchise.
Now that it looks like they won't be getting an NBA team anytime soon, and NHL expansion is a real possibility, who knows if they'd amend the deal.

Deadline for expansion applications is Monday, but it looks like there won't be an application from Seattle because of the arena issues:

Boooo I want Seattle more than any other spot for some reason.
Oh well at least they can keep it as a hammer for PHX or FLA.

Too bad about Seattle. I guess we're only getting one team for now, unless some other unlikely western market unexpectedly steps up.

With the cap, won't teams just put up boat anchor contract players in the expansion draft?

Yes? And the expansion team will probably ignore them or take them and get trade a pic as well.
I imagine team put up the players they least want on their team, just like every draft!
Having a few boat achors contract will actually make the teams more compititive.

Not to be rude, but is there any way to remove this? It's a tad bothersome to read it each time.
