They should convert him to the wing, he sucks at defence.

I hope they fit Justin for a green jacket because he has an excellent chance of winning the Masters next season.

Wonder what this guy could have been if he had just stuck with Anaheim. Now that's a team that knows how to develop young defensemen.
I also wonder if he can be salvaged? He probably could have been a second pairing, top powerplay guy. Maybe he can still be a #5 powerplay specialist for some team. Even his offense seems to have diminished during his time in edmonton though.
Could be tough for him to get a contract if he thinks any other team is paying that kind of money for him though.

This is what happens when you put some high potential prospect onto a defence without much of a core or identity

Not going to lie, I like seeing these entitled college boys bust hard. If he would've just signed with the Ducks his whole career would've likely turned out differently. Serves him right to drown in Edmonton's ineptitude.

Am I correct in reading that Justin Schultz had 0 power play goals last season?
Isn't it a bit funny paying almost $4m for a power play specialist who didn't score a single power play goal in an entire season?

Schultz was on the ice for 58% of Edmonton's powerplay time and got 11 points. That's atrocious production.

Educating Jeff and Justin...
The problem of Justin Schultz is not entirely Justin Schultz's fault. After years of futile results, the Oilers organization were filled with desperate men doing desperate things. Starting with the fall of Ryan Whitney's play due to recurring injuries, the likes of Petry and later Schultz were placed into roles of top pairing dmen when clearly they were not ready. Now the Oilers through their inability to make the bold moves to attain some veteran dmen to shelter the young and inexperienced Petry and Schultz, the Oilers fast tracked these guys while hoping everything will stick on the wall during their growth and development. Young dmen especially under 25 who are not elite enough will find it challenging to succeed while playing big minutes if not mentored/sheltered by veteran top dmen.

I would go ballistic if the Flames signed him for 3.9 million for a season, so I'm pretty happy about this signing.
I also agree the spot he's in is not all his fault. Had he stayed in Anaheim his career trajectory would have been much better. He shares blame with his agent and the mess that is the Oilers' player management.

I agree especially when one of his few reasons for signing with a team was to be able to play a lot of minutes meaning not be the 6 or 7 dman. This would be to his detriment in terms of development.

Lots of defencemen turned out ok despite not having veteran Defence mentors.
Some players just suck. Schultz is one of them.

Loved it. I scraped the shaving off the ice he skated on and bottled it and it is my deep freeze next to my road kill carcass. That night while I slept, I saw dancing sugar plums...

I highly doubt that "lots" of dmen turned out fine without vets mentoring/sheltering them esp under 25 yrs of age...I would say most likely the elite ones but not across the board. They may turn out ok after a few years of trial and error during their development but not right out of the gate are they fine.
