I enjoy 4th Spot, on 4th street just north of 16th ave. Local food, reasonably priced, very tasty.

Aren't there a bunch of nice places on Barlow in between McKnight & 32nd? I remember there being a Joeys, Cactus Club (pretty sure they have a restaurant for kids), Earls, etc.?

Hard to go wrong with Montana's, Boston Pizza etc. Those were the 'fancy' places we upgraded to once the kids were old enough to take to a real restaurant.

Kinjo Sushi & Grill. Unlike places like BP, the food rises above merely edible, and there's a good vibe of people genuinely enjoying themselves. And they're very welcoming to kids - they'll often bring complimentary fruit platters carved up in happy faces, the staff sing songs, and the kids get a box of Pocky chocolates at the end of the meal.

Despite the fact that Pocky Sticks are revolting the food is good and reasonable. If your kids like Sushi.
I like going there, I go once or twice a month with my daughter. Her favourite food is Sushi.
Eating me out of house and home that one is...always with the sushi! Stuff is expensive!!

Depending on the tastebuds, there are tons of places - NE - Fat Kee Noodle House, Inti (Peruvian), Clay Oven (Indian) - all in one plaza. Basil for Vietnamese, or head to the Forest Lawn/17th Ave SE for Ethiopian, more Vietnamese, Portuguese etc. For pizza, I believe that there is a Famoso pizza somewhere in the NW now?
We have a 3 year old and there aren't many places we won't take her. I think since she's been born, we've eaten at Montana's once (at the airport) and Boston Pizza about 3 times - those places are just dreadful.

You don't have to be relegated to chain restaurants when you have kids. The trick is finding one that is relatively loud so you don't feel like a dick when your kid acts up (I have a 2 year old, I should know), but still has some space to maneuver strollers etc.
Some places that we find are good with kids:
• LDV Pizza in Bridgeland is great. There are always families around, it's loud enough so you don't bother others, and it has some fantastic pizza.
• La Cantina - Also in Bridgeland, at the Italian Club, has a great restaurant inside, and there's a couple of bocce ball lanes right inside so your kids can play that when they are bored.
• Cibo on 17th. More trendy and full of cooler people, but we've always had a nice time there. The place is nice and spacious, and has a great kids menu.
• Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus - A nice change of pace from the usual, and family friendly too.
