Black Betty downtown Calgary closed..
Noticed part way through Stampede that they papered over their windows... now there is a 'for lease' sign on the windows. Anyone know what happened?
Good burgers and happy hour wine specials...sad to see it gone.

Every restaurant in that building has suffered from perpetual turnover. Think Black Betty's tenure was the longest, but still quite short. Nothing seems to work there despite being a pretty decent location.

It wasn't much of a restaurant. It was a decent nightclub at one point. I partied with Henrik Karlsson there once for some reason. I remember telling him that he's a better goalie than Kiprusoff and he gave me a big hug and followed me around all night. I also saw Jeremy Roenick there around the Heritage classic, I think he was part of the NBC broadcast crew. I kind of said "Yo Jeremy!" and gave him a first bump.
The place was alright, sadly it turned into a drug dealers hangout and all the average people stopped going.

Their French onion soup was a disgrace. Piece of rubbery cheese on a slice of bread, placed on top of the soup! Yikes.
Didn't mind it overall though - another option down the drain

Good riddance to awful rubbish.
Only purpose that place served was to ensure that the majority of trash in this city could be concentrated in one place so as to be dealt with easier.
Only place I have personally witnessed a girl get knocked out by a dude, a guy get beaten repeatedly in the street with a chain and another guy get stabbed and then stumble away to avoid the police vans using his girlfriend as a crutch... all in the same night.

I worked with one of the managing partners in a restaurant in 2002-03. He was terrible then, but he thought he was phenomenal. I'm surprised the place lasted as long as it did with him in charge. He's already updated his LinkedIn profile to put that as a former employer.

I heard a rumor that the owners of Black Betty owed the Landlord over $100K in rent (or something along those lines). The landlord changed all the locks the day before stampede to show them a lesson.

I dont know what to say to that. It was likely just a matter of time but that probably sealed the deal of the landlord even getting pennies on the dollar of the outstanding rent which may have been unwise.

You can't get blood from a stone. At least this prevented the tenant from walking away with some profits from Stampede week -- the likelihood of any of that cash ending up with the landlord was slim at best, especially once legal fees are involved.

The locks were changed and a chain on the door. My brother in law worked there. They were able to get in to get their personal knives and were given the food before it went bad.
