If he flops (doubtful) then the Flames roll with the wonder duo again. If Ortio earns his spot, one of Ramo or Hiller are out.

Some fans are adamant that Hiller is the one to get the boot but I disagree. Ramo will be. I feel like Hiller veteran edge is going to win the spot in camp. And Ramo is on a cheap deal that can get a better return.
I think both Ramo and Hiller are on the block and Treliving trades whoever gets a better return. Hiller might be attractive to a team looking for more experience, but Ramo has the slightly better contract to trade.

I agree that those who assume it's Hiller are jumping the gun. Hartley seemed to prefer Hiller slightly (yes I know Ramo got the elimination games, but Hiller got some big starts as well, including starting against the Ducks despite being yanked against the Canucks).

I agree that it could be either goalie traded. My question is , is there a team that needs a high priced 1b goalie?

I guess the flames can hope for an injury to a starting goaltender during pre-season, but even then that goalie would have to be out long term. I guess the flames could eat 50% of the contract, but have there been many cases of a team eating 50% of contract on a player making $3-4 million?

Possibly stupid question; assuming Ortio is waived and clears, do we have to expose him to re entry waivers if we need/wish to bring him up later on?

Re-entry waivers were removed during the last negotiations, so not an issue.

I worry that Ortio's patience might run out though if he spends almost another full season in the minors. He said at the end of last season that he intends on being the #1 goalie in Calgary next season, so I imagine he will be extremely disappointed if he doesn't make the team.

I think a few teams would think of them as really good backups, especially contenders. And especially where the number one is younger and potentially unsteady. It's only 1 year of salary, and a team could pick them up and move them if necessary at the deadline.

Or a low ranked team that has a bunch of kids in goal might want an older option.

So maybe AZ, Columbus, Buffalo, Carolina...

Yeah, if I was Ortio, I would be asking for a trade If was sent down to the AHL again. He has nothing left to prove in the AHL and deserves the chance to play in the NHL. It's not like Hiller or Ramo are great goalies.

I predict that Ortio earns a spot in camp. He's really good. I bet he gets almost 40 starts this year.

Ramo and Hiller will both look like capable "1b" goalies again. Brad considers offers for either one, and eventually trades Hiller for 4th and 5th round picks with $500,000 salary retained.

Depending on the amount of injuries to Flames roster players (particularly forwards and goalies) during training camp, there may be room to keep all three until November. This might allow for better trade returns.

Brad will be patient.

The fact that the Flames signed Ramo, makes me feel that Treliving thinks he can deal Hiller, if Ortio has a strong camp and shows he is ready for the NHL as 1A and 1B combo with Ramo.

I think both Ramo and Hiller are able to be moved. Even though we signed Ramo now, I wouldn't be surprised if he is moved well before the TDL. Hiller too.

I think salary retained Ramo and Hiller salary retained are easy trades for injury or for a team who needs time to evaluate a goalie who isn't working out. It perhaps could be used as incentive to take on Raymond's or whoever's contract. I actually assume sooner or later both will be moved and Treliving will be bringing in his own guy as a starter with Ortio backing up.

I'm thinking older guy with a few years contract with a young guy quickly stealing his spot could be another possibility if injuries are not considered.
