Don't know what else King is supposed to say when someone asks him specifically for the arena update. Although he did say this is a minimal ask from the government.
Sorry for the bump (no news) but relevant regarding the taxpayer vs private funding argument:

I am really excited to see their proposal as they keep saying tax payers will be OK with it. Should be very interesting!

Watched this last night. Phoenix/Glendale is far from the worst for stadium costs. And John Oliver's comment about Yankee Stadium needs to be taken in context about the City giving them land and tax breaks to the tune of $100M dollars. Yes the city did give them breaks but the Yankees payroll and entertainment taxes are over $20M/year benefit to the City of New York alone. The Yankees were discussing building the new stadium in Jersey at the time so the city would have lost this money.
I agree that if the Flames build the district without a direct taxpayer input then this will be exciting to see what they build. I believe that it will take some land/tax breaks from the City, but the city will more than recoup their money over time.
Anyone else perplexed by the taser thing in the video? Just a 'murica thing?
Pretty much. It was a charity fundraiser. Its akin to a dunktank in Canada, but you know 'Murica, they go big.
I'm actually a bit torn on that John Oliver one. Its seems fairly shortsighted in a lot of ways. Hes absolutely bang on that some Governments have signed atrocious deals, I'll grant him that.
But just saying 'these people are billionaires, give them nothing!' isnt 100% accurate either.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

If it was easy to sell the economic impact of a new stadium there wouldn't be threats about re-location.
If it was easy to sell the economic impact of a new stadium, there would be an endless parade of economists on TV talking about those positive impacts.
If it was easy to sell the economic impact of a new Stadium, Ken King probably isn't talking about it in abstract for 6 years telling us how close it is and how much we'll like it.
Eventually a fish is just a fish.

Giving land breaks to a tenant that you're going to collect lots of revenue from is one thing. Giving hundreds of millions of dollars in government loans to businesses that could afford to finance privately is a bad value proposition.

The threat wasn't credible at all. The Yankees valuation is heavily tied to it being in New York City. The'll risk tens to hundreds of million dollars of gate revenues.
As for a new arena for Calgary, we will need a big area of land to accommodate everything in a state of the art fashion. Though I like the idea of having the new arena where the greyhound station, it doesn't seem like an ideal solution to situate a new district. (hotel, entertainment, media center etc) If there isn't any other places that struck out as a perfect location besides the greyhound station, we would most definitely have to re work Bow Trail SW to work with all the traffic during peak times.
It would be great if the Flames Ownership & Stampede Co, can both work together on a project and bridge the LRT from the stampede to the new arena, vice versa. (expansion to the stampede seems like something that would create a new scenery to downtown)
As for the arena, I would love if Calgary had a layout in terms of the seating something similar to TD Garden. Lower bowl, then seperated by two tier coperate boxes, and onto the second bowl with nosebleeds on top:
Of course this arena will need to hold other events such as Concerts, Hitmen, Roughnecks.
Outside of the arena, the Calgary Flames should add a practice facility near the arena instead of having a hassle of driving to the south-west just to play at the WinSport Facility. Also having a entertainment area near the arena will also be beneficial in the rejuvenation of West Village and to like I said earlier, maybe an expansion to the stampede? This could definitely serve as a place as the new red mile for the Flames, and it would be even more appealing if they could somehow set up a huge projection somewhere to showcase the games live for those who aren't in the arena. Something similar to what LA Live is and that can accommodate the screen just like Toronto did when the Raptors played:
I've created a quick concept of what something might look like, it may be ambitious but, it could definitely be scaled down a bit. Lots of road-reroutes will need to be taken place with underground work as well..
Yellow: Stadiums Blue: Parking Purple: Underground Bow Trail SW Orange: District Roads Green: Shops, Restaurant Media, Plaza, Hotel etc (entertainment area) + Large park to occupy large events with a public screening Blue: LRT + Bus Line Black: Pedestrian Walk
I plan making a rendering, and designs of the area with a design software later that should have better details of road-work and what the area could look like.

I hope they just build a new stadium in the Stampede area. Perfect place for it as there needs to be a tremendous amount of space for the actual stampede that lends itself to parking during the season.
Plus, I may be wrong but doesnt the Stampede get a break on all that land, already? may be helpful in terms of the city not having to offer similar breaks.
The Stampede area has also strongly committed to redeveloping the area surrounding, which again provides a mutual benefit to the city, the team, and the stampede.
I for one an always weary of building a "district" centered around a stadium. I mean, outside of maybe 100 days a year, who wants to hang around by an empty stadium..
It would be far better to realign bow trail up against the rail tracks to free up the space that had the highest real estate value, which is the riverfront.
