2 best goalies in pre-season make the team. If Ortio can't beat out Ramo or Hiller i see very little chance that he is claimed on waivers.
The real question will be if Ortio wins one of the spots, can the flames trade one of the other 2 goalies? Think Flames will have to eat some salary to make trade happen.

When Ortio signed his 2 year contract, I always thought it was a bad idea that his 2nd year was a 1-way deal. I think he's on the right track and will be a solid #1, but he's only 24 and most goalies are still finding their way at that age. I would be happy with Ramo and Hiller sharing duties for another season.
And I certainly think Ortio would be claimed if we tried to pass him thru waivers. Even if he doesn't win a spot come training camp and everyone thinks other GM's wouldn't claim him, I'm not buying that. He has #1 upside. Hell the Oilers would claim him just to spite us.

They'd have to waive Scrivens, Talbot or Nilsson then.

Roll 3 goalies, move an extra goalie by TDL for an asset. Keep ear to ground for disappointing starters or desperate injury plagued teams.
If we pick up a starter, both Ramo and Hiller are gone.

Nilsson isn't much of a goalie, Scrivens has fallen out of favour and there is talk about Oilers trying to cut him lose.
Talbot is the guy and Oilers would take Ortio as the backup in a heartbeat.
I cannot imagine Treliving taking the risk of losing Ortio.

I will emphatically state that's the Flames won't break camp with 3 goalies, because that would mean keeping only 13f when we all know that the Flames have at least 15 ready to play.

Re-signing Ramo was a contingency plan depending on how Ortio fares in main camp.
If he flops (doubtful) then the Flames roll with the wonder duo again. If Ortio earns his spot, one of Ramo or Hiller are out.
Some fans are adamant that Hiller is the one to get the boot but I disagree. Ramo will be. I feel like Hiller veteran edge is going to win the spot in camp. And Ramo is on a cheap deal that can get a better return.

There will be at least one team having goaltending issues or injuries during the preseason and Hiller will be traded at 50% retained for a 3rd round pick plus AHL goalie.
Hopefully all three goalies play well in camp and that trade is easy. In the worst case scenario where all goalies are average to poor then Ortio can likely pass waivers.

Isn't Ortio waiver eligible due to age rather than contract status? AFAIK 1 way/2 way contracts merely dictate the wages for a player depending on whether they are in the NHL or AHL. Waiver eligibility is based on another set of criteria that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Stockton, not Adirondack. I don't see Ortio going all the way down to the ECHL level.

To be clear I was saying Gillies could go to Adirondack (ECHL) not Ortio.

Ortio and Ramo win jobs out of camp and Hiller is traded early in the season.

That is what I think will happen. I think Treliving brings three into camp for a competition and will wait and see what the lancdscape is like after training camp. Knowing Treliving he probably already has half the trade worked out from his dealing with GM's all year. He is probably waiting to see if any goalie goes down early to get a better return.

Markstrom last year isn't a good comparable to Ortio. Markstrom looked like a complete mess two years ago. The Canucks wouldn't play him because he looked so awful. Ortio doesn't have the same baggage. If you are a rebuilding team like the Leafs... why would you take Ortio on waivers and try to move one of your goalies.

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but if Ortio was placed on waivers and a team claims him, does he have to stay on their NHL roster or could he be on their AHL roster?
If the latter, then I have little doubt that he would get claimed. If he had to stay in the NHL off waivers then there's a chance he wouldn't.

He would have to stay on the NHL roster all year or clear waivers to get sent down by his new team.

Like many, I believe we roll with Ramo / Ortio and trade Hiller for a small asset.
Since Hiller is $4.5M and Ramo is $3.8M, I think it's an easy case for Tree to make to the exec that they could / should retain ~$700k. If retaining more gets them a higher pick then I'm sure he'll get the green light but I'll predict a 4th rounder with $700k retained.
I'll further predict that once Hiller is moved, Ramo signs a two-year extension before Christmas. Gillies is a long ways off and I think everyone would like two goalies locked-up for the near-future. So by Christmas, Ramo is extended two more years at $4.2 per year. After the season, we sign Ortio to a three-year deal and he and Gillies battle-it-out once Ramo's extension is up after the 2017 / 2018. (Ramo will have a ring by then!)

I think Ramo can't be extended until Jan. 1st but I hope you're right and he proves himself enough to earn the extension. Though he needs to be more consistent before I would re-sign him.
My preferred scenario would be for Hiller to be traded and Ortio taking over the #1 goalie position. Ortio signs a 4 year extension at $3 million/yr. Then sign a backup (maybe Ramo) in the off-season if Gillies is not ready for the 2016-17 season.

He has to be waived again to go down to the AHL. And if Calgary re-claims on the waivers, then he can go straight to the AHL.
