Yeah, but in the end, what it costs is not a big factor - and he is a late second round pick after all.
I think, in this case, he is way better off in NA, where the Flames at least have some if not all control over his development.

That is because there is a defined transfer agreement that specifies the amount of money an NHL team can give for a prospect with every European hockey country except Russia.

The Russians want a much higher transfer fee than what the other countries have agreed to.

Coming over to Canada might be exactly what he needs. The CHL and AHL are great development leagues. Over in Sweden I'm sure they are much more concerned with the team than they are with his career. I really really hope he gets over here because he obviously has a ton of talent and could be a huge part of the Flames future.

Yeah, I see his situation much like Backlund's when he was in Sweden. Swedish team not enamoured with him and know his future isn't there, so treat him as an afterthought. I'd like to see him go to Brandon and be a star but I'll trust our management to make the decision of there or Stockton.

I'd like to see him in NA with Brandon. Play him with Povarov as a pairing and let the good times roll.

Trying to find some gossip/rumours on fan sites for AIK. Not finding much about Kylington. Here are some projected lines at least if he stays. Looks like he would be a first pairing guy.

Spoiler!

Time will tell, but I honestly think provorov is ahead of both of those guy. I think he's the best defenseman from this draft

Well yes and no. As with the Kylington case, that transfer agreement doesn't apply to all situations. But at least Finnish teams have been pretty sporting about it. If the players want to go, they can go.

For the Russians it's not just about the money. As the NHL commented on the failed transfer agreement negotiations, the Russians just don't want to make a deal. Having Russian players play in Russia is important for that league, especially now that it has hit financial hard times. (Not that it's ever been a profitable league, or drawn great crowds considering the size of the country.)

This is my understanding of the situation after talking to a few people:

The Flames can pay a transfer fee to sign Kylington to a NHL contract, this can happen without the consent of AIK.

The fee is $240k US for the first 10 players the NHL signs out of Sweden or $325k US for any player after the first 10.

However there may be a deadline this summer (not exactly sure when) as to when the Flames can still pay the transfer fee, or Kylington stays in Sweden for the year.

The problem is however the 2nd part of the agreement where the Flames must offer Kylington back to AIK before assigning him to the CHL or AHL because he isn't a 1st round pick. This is where the Flames can get screwed in paying the transfer fee but Kylington still ends up playing in Europe.

So what AIK wants is the whole crux of the situation and if Kylington is penciled in to be their top pairing, they won't let him go easily.

Also talk of additional compensation is moot. The NHL will not allow a team to pay more money than what it already negotiated with a hockey federation, as it will undermine the whole transfer agreement.

Maybe it's because I'm a dad, but 18 in a foreign country might not be best for the kid. OK is confident but he could use some time around parents. If he comes over, I think you want him living with a vet. Maybe we sign oduya?

Is Oduya going to live in Stockton or Brandon? Because it is extremely unlikely Kylington plays in Calgary next season.

I would prefer Kylington to play in Stockton but if he is going to be in the top pairing with AIK as Sureloss mentioned then I am fine with that. He will develop as long as he is getting alot of minutes. Sign him this time next year and put him Stockton to start 2016-17

Hypothetically speaking, if we did sign him and had to re-assign him to AIK, would the Flames still be on the hook for his salary?

The problem is that if he starts to falter, they really have no special interest in putting his development in front of winning. The CHL and AHL are in the business of developing NHL players and no system anywhere in the world is as good at it as those leagues. As Sureloss pointed out, it might be a moot point anyway though.

I think he just needs some stability, I think he mentioned something in his fan interview at the draft that at one point he was sent back to farjestad at one point because the team he was on couldn't afford to pay his salary due to a timing issue or something. I think what's best for his development is a season where he can just focus on hockey and not jumping between cities constantly

That's how hockey goes. I think it's part of the reason that a lot of "local" kids don't always have the allegiance to the team you might expect. A lot of them leave home fairly early to play elsewhere. If you want a shot then you can't expect to just live at home for those years.
