That's kind of odd, his stats for the past 3 years in college have been pretty underwhelming. Did he stand out much in the scrimmage? I didn't notice him too much.
I thought of the college invites, Hawkins was the most impressive of the bunch. Short but stocky and a good skater with a good shot.
He scored a pair, both by crashing the net and added an assist.
Hawkins and Baillie are the best in terms of raw skill but they are both short so there are more obstacles to overcome to reach the next level.
I don't really understand why he has such poor numbers. He does have a higher level of skill than someone with as crappy of stats as he has.

Other than Kylington, don't agree with your assessments at all. It was almost like you were watching a different game? This of course is what makes watching hockey so much fun. Everyone sees different things and keys on different aspects of the game, so we're unlikely to come to similar conclusions much of the time.
One thing I really noticed was there were two players on the ice that changed the flow and dynamic of every shift they took; Jankowski and Kylington. Everyone else was a complimentary player out there. Another thing that really stood out to me was one player was exceptional at using his linemates, and that was Jankowski. The subtle plays he made to create open ice for his linemates to create offense was outstanding. Even though Klimchuk stated that the players didn't really know each other or how each other played, that didn't prevent one guy from standing out in using the other guys on ice, every shift.
The most impressive individual talent on the ice was Kylington. The best hockey player was Jankowski, and it was much of a contest. With the talent level that was out there, that says something. I also have to give some love to two guys that seemed to be over-looked, but were still impressive in their performances, and those are Poirier and Klimchuk. I know everyone wants to see players score points, but the little things these guys do defensively and then in the offensive zone to create open ice is outstanding. The future is bright, even if the RDDI (Ricardo Debbie Downer Index) says otherwise.
I think I almost value the less positive assessments like 868904 more. I appreciate everyone who watches perspective, but the reports in recent times have been so rosey I need the grounding.

I only saw yesterday but I tend to just report on what I liked unless someone was really dogging it or something. We're all just watching, none of us are anything close to NHL scouts and it's almost impossible to glean any real information from a bunch of practises so keep it light and don't rag on a kid if he's had a bad day or week.

I remember when Feaster was fired, Burke listed 'drafting' as one of the reasons (along with trades and forgot what else).

It's no secret that Burke didn't like Baertschi, so you might be onto something. At the time of the comments everyone still thought highly of Baertschi so naturally everyone pointed to the Jankowski pick instead. In reality, Burke would be the first guy to jump on a skilled player who just had a huge growth spurt.

That's a good strategy. I think in general most of the scouting reports by fans are overly optimistic (i.e. saying 4 defenseman at this camp are NHL ready now when its highly likely that only 2 or 3 guys will ever have a real NHL career), but some information is better than none.

slightly off topic, but I really have a hard time calling and thinking of Smith as a kid. The combination of his size and *beard, it just does not scream kid, lol

All the more impressive for me is Kylington's performance despite his being off the ice for 2 months. He just stepped in and looks like one of the best of the bunch (and he's younger than everyone else too). This just enforces my belief that he is our best prospect after Sam.
