After not having centers for so long, I am thrilled the Flames have actual depth at the position and I hope they do everything possible to keep that depth. It would be great in two seasons time to have a 28 year old Backlund as an option to press the other three centers (Monahan 22, Jankowski 22, Bennett 21) to keep their play at a high level and earn their minutes night in and night out.
Bill Arnold was also making a push on the farm team before his shoulder injury.

Anyone who is touching the ice for the first time in months is just hurting their own chances and needs to learn that the hardest workers are the ones that make it.

As for Jankowski, I will never consider hard work or preparation as any kind of negative or reason to downplay success. I want to hear that guys are working their butts off in the summer to improve.

More power to him!

I have both the sessions and OT recorded + the shootouts. My arms feel like they're going to fall off, but it's all good.

Jankowski, Poirier, Smith, Carroll, Kylington, Morrison, and Andersson were the best of the bunch

I have no issue if guys aren't skating as long as they are still working out.

These guys have long seasons (especially CHL playoffs) and play a lot of hockey. If they want to take a month off that is fine.

Wouldn't be surprised if that's why a guy like Smith took some time to get his game going. After going to the Memorial cup he probably hasn't played a lot of hockey or skated a ton since.

Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
New to #Flames staff as a power skating consultant is Dawn Braid. Rasmus Andersson among players she's working with.

Great stuff. Dawn Braid is considered one of the best skating coaches out there.

Wonder if that means Troy Crowder is still with the team.

This camp isn't designed for players to try and make the team. It's called a development camp because it's gives the prospects a chance to learn what they need to work on and to meet everyone else in the organization. Nobody is "hurting their chances" at this camp. It's a learning tool.

With that being said I'm very pleased to hear that Janko is looking like one of the best players out there. In reality, he is expected to be. He is one of the oldest guys here.

I suspect Treliving would agree. He was adamant that development camp is not a tryout camp

For what it's worth, Mark Jankowski has been the most impressive player in this scrimmage. #Flames

I don't think you can make a negative impression, but I do think you can make a positive one

Was at the scrimmage today and agree our prospect depth is looking much better. I agree with Caged Great's assessments.

On the big boy side Hunter Smith, Keegan Kanzig and Austin Carroll all showed good skill and skating development compared with last year. Having these beasts with some speed and finesse is going to be a nice option for the Flames down the road.

Also the recent draft picks also showed well. Rasmus Andersson and Oliver Kylington both impressed with their skating and their offensive and defensive play. Anderson has a bit of an edge to him too. And Mangiopane was also noticeable when he was on the ice - similar to Johnny he has this ability to make something happen almost every time he touches the puck.

In terms of returning vets I thought Poirier, Jankowski and Klimchuk all acquitted themselves well.

Also watching the room that the Flames management were in you could tell by the end of the scrimmage that Treliving was pleased with what he was observing.

The future continues to look promising for this team.

Just saying.

Still a good sign he is one of the better players at camp.
Plus this is his third camp. I love that he is performing. But this is a development camp in July. We need to temper enthusiasm.

The way I look at it is the company he put himself in.

Porier has looked good at the AHL and NHL level and throughout the whole camp Janko has looked on par with him.

IMO that is very telling. Kind of similar to how over time you could tell Gaudreau was a couple of classes above the rest when he came to this camp.

Especially considering that Connor McDavid score FIVE GOALS at the Oilers' non-contact version of this game.

I'm not sure if you guys heard about that.

But it's a super big deal.

Prior to camp there was a huge debate about whether Jankowski is trending to player or bust. His showing here doesn't prove he'll be a player but it does support the idea that he is trending towards one.

I am happy. But I am not ready to throw him into pro and start writing him onto the roster because of a good scrimmage in a July development camp. The same way I am not ready to start bumping Klimchuk down my prospect rankings because he didn't stand out.

Its a development camp in July. Take it for what it is.

that was on sportsnet so we all could see it!

I guess we couldn't get the equivalent of full network coverage with Roger, Spector, the usual crew commentating due to...not being Oilers.

5 goals you say though? wow. against the same players he has been playing against for years. they need to take the gretzky statue down.

No one is saying that on this message board. We're just excited at his development trajectory.

I've always been a big proponent of taking development camps with a big grain of salt, I've been going to these since Mike Commodore and JF Damphouse skated at SAIT looking sad that they're former teams were in the Cup Finals (Ducks and Devils) and here they were in Calgary. But I'm also not a fan of wet blankets. Let people get excited if they want, no one is pencilling Jankowski into the starting line up either however.

A strong camp seems to has either A)reinforced peoples thoughts that he could have easily turned pro for the upcoming season or B) Shown people that couldn't see Friars what a long way he's come since being drafted.

No one was pencilling him into the Calgary Flames roster this fall based on this camp. Haven't seen that once in this thread.
