When I see the disaster thread title I assume a tornado hit the games or something blew up, I then open the thread and remember that it's about traffic congestion.

Quit whining. If anything, the change should be permanent to encourage HOV's. Hell, we should have the same thing here.

As someone who routinely works in the GTA, I have to ask if you even know what the traffic situation there is like. Because making a permanent HOV lane on the 4-series highways would make Toronto's awful traffic situation worse by several orders of magnitude... save for the 407 ETR, but that's because it's prohibitively expensive for many people, and quite far away from downtown. Damn thing is usually empty (which is awesome).
Traffic is bumper to bumper as far back as Mississauga. I remember trying to take the 401 from Mississauga Road to Mavis, and it took a solid twenty minutes. Twenty minutes to go ~4.5 kilometres. That's with the normal three eastbound lanes available.
If you seriously think it's a good idea to restrict the left lane to but a fraction of the overall traffic that goes through there (HOV = 3 or more? Really?) and force everyone else and semis to share two piddly lanes, I think you need to share the drugs you're taking because it sounds like a real hoot to be that divorced from reality.
As for having them here permanently, no. Having them active during lane reversals only is more than sufficient for our needs.

It was actually run very well, they had the Olympic only lanes on a lot of the major streets and there were plenty of closed streets around venues but a lot of people used transit, even though during those 3 weeks I think they said its use was 250% of normal
a difference though is that so many of the events here were within a small area, whereas for summer events it's much more spread out so a plan is much easier to implement
A plan is easier to implement for a much more spread out area? Typo? If not, could you explain? I would think a larger space is harder to implement as being spread out means more to police.

oh FFS, I'm sick of people in this city complaining about traffic. It's the only thing people ever talk about, especially with the games. It's amazing that the 3+ HOV lanes have been in effect for a week and now more than ever before I see loaded cars zipping down the HOV lane, to the point where some are getting full.
What people don't comprehend is that 3 people getting in one car (instead of one per car) cuts out 2 cars off the road. You do that with enough cars you reduce congestion. In effect, the capacity of the road increases. I want to see it remain implemented full-time with an additional 2+ lane directly beside it. Incentivize people to commute together or charge people for a permit to "access" the HOV lanes without the number of people necessary and use the proceeds to directly fund further public infrastructure development.
And start talking about something else.

I would love to see companies implement a working from home policy for a portion of their staff each day (for example, 10% each day). On top of that, why do all staff need to arrive at 8? Why not let an additional 25% arrive by 9, or 10?
There are many ways to reduce traffic and many cities implement none of them.
^It isn't the cities' jobs to regulate the working hours of private businesses.

People have such short memories these days. This is always the story leading up to any major event these days. Remember the first few days before Sochi? Every single reporter in the world was tweeting pictures of their hotel bed and toilet? Remember the last (3) World Cups? OMG Traffic! OMG tourists! OMG ticket sales! Remember the Vancouver Olympics? OMG unsafe venues! OMG terrorists!
A day or two in to the games everyone will have forgotten about this.
Sometime around the 3rd of February 2018 someone on CP will start a thread about OMG Korean Winter Olympics are the WORST EVER!!! Snore.

The Mississauga portion of the 401 is the worst because they haven't expanded out the collector/express system out there yet because the overpass bridges weren't build to accommodate so many lanes. They are working on it now and it will improve that section. The rest of the 401 has like 12-18 lanes... they are getting to the point where you just have to figure out a way to get cars off the road since you don't have room to make it any bigger.
The 407 is ridiculously expensive since the PC government of the time 'leased' it out to a 3rd party and they jacked the rates. It was built more as a way to bypass the 401 in Toronto.

you are talking about world cups and olympics, at least those tickets get sold. Nobody is going to the Pan Am Games.
Torontonians say they would attend an Olympic event but not a Pan Am Games event? Really? If you've always wanted to see beach volleyball, go see it. Is Canada vs Brazil any different than Canada vs Italy? Nobody can name a beach volleyball athlete from any country anyways.
