They received a 1st round pick from last year's draft in Kaperis Kapanen, D Scott Harrington, veteran Spalling(was decent in Nashville) and some draft picks. All they did was retained 15% of contract, got rid of a prospect Biggs who doesn't seem to fit in and much travelled D Tim Erixon, whom they picked up free on waiver last season. Now the Leafs will have cap space to sign another player. So if another team is willing to do the same thing for Phaneuf, Brendan Shanahan will be laughing.
As for Kessel, i think he is lucky that he won't get picked on by Toronto media as much anymore. He won't be the go-to-guy in Pittsburgh and he'll even play with either Crosby or Malkin. That's like winning the lottery.

The Leafs aren't signing anyone with that cap space. They may take a bad contract off someone's hands, but that's it.

Not the least bit realistic. He's been PPG. Is 8th in overall points the last 5 years and has been UFA eligible. We've seen 3rd liners get 5.5 million+ since he signed his deal.

What's not realistic? Anything under 7 (which is what Pens agreed to) being solid for him? Or his 7 years remaining being a problem for teams?

I guess I'll ask you a question then.
If he's such a great player and scorer, why did only one team get serious with the Leafs about trading for him? I mean, if his contract is fair value in your mind.

He had a NTC. His list was a terrible one for making a deal. All his teams had serious cap issues.
Now we're changing the subject. No one as good as Kessel with his stats will be worth 6 million per.

Then why was it reported that the Flames were kicking tires but the Pens were the only serious bidder? The Flames weren't on his list. There weren't teams lining up for him, mainly due to that contract of his. It's why the Leafs had to eat some salary as well.

At 6x6, who would you rather have right now, Phil Kessel or Taylor Hall? Personally I'd say Hall (I'm going for a shower now, I feel so dirty).

In that case, Kessel. But mostly because Hall is fragile as hell and is pretty much a lock to miss 20 games a year.
And BigTuna - you can't really argue against the idea that Kessel is really worth less than $7 million when the only team that was really interested in was interested only below $7 million. Otherwise, Toronto would not be eating 15% of his salary.
Even then, all that netted you was a non-guaranteed first round pick, a meh defensive prospect and a decent forward prospect. Even then, you had to give up a 2nd and a couple spare parts to get it done.

Kessel in a heartbeat. 5 time 30 goal scorer (also on pace in lockout season) who has a fat face and is awkward with the media - only ridiculed because he was in Toronto. Has not missed a game in the last 5 seasons, and has only missed 24 in his entire career. He also has 22 career playoff games. Terrible defensively.
Taylor Hall has played 75, 65, 61, 53 and 45 (lockout) games. I suppose he's been on pace to score 30 goals a couple times, but those theoretical goals don't do much for your team. 0 playoff games played. Terrible defensively.

Comparing Kessel, RORs and Halls contracts.
I'd prefer Kessel by a mile

Shanahan claims there were others interested BTW.
And yes, he's worth more than 7. Aklexander Semin is worth 7.5 million per.
