The other problem with voat is that it has become the go-to place for angry people who want free reign to harass and troll people and aren't allowed to do that on Reddit anymore, which is going to restrict Voat's appeal.

I guess this is a fallacy akin to people who think Twitter is for posting what you eat for lunch everyday, which it was when I joined over 8 years ago. Now Twitter literally runs the FoI forum - every thread is started from a breaking tweet.

I don't post on Reddit very often, but I go because of the people who do. You can find great up to date information on so many topics. If there was a better alternative I would leave. Something like Calgary Puck with world wide reach would be perfect.

Reddit still claims to be in the red, IE: it's not actually profitable and it is a money-loser. There are no obvious ads on Reddit. It supposedly mainly derives revenue from selling Reddit gold and branded merchandise. Reminds of PBS fund-raising in some ways.
I can definitely see how the powers-that-be would want to make things a little more commercial at the expense of the dedicated community.

I bet the Digg admins had the same confidence. Once valued at 160 million, sold for 500k

Folks often think that the internet is bigger than it it. I have been to Reddit once, for instance, and didn't find it particularly interesting...but I post the occasional thing in F&C, which I'm sure has also been on Reddit.

One of the greatest ironies of these kerfuffles is that anyone who says to stop giving Reddit gold to protest the latest controversy is inevitably given Reddit gold.
For a few days at the peak of the /r/fatpeoplehate banning controversy, Reddit was puling in 200% of its daily goal.

Don't worry I'm sure the internet will find another place to swap anonymous stories about stalking women streamers on Twitch.

Oh don't get me wrong. There's much more to reddit than funny cat pictures. There are some really interesting and informative subreddits that I visit all the time. My comment was merely an observation that the source for much of the materials in the Funny Pic thread, much like yours about the source of the FoI forum being twitter, is taken from reddit or was at least posted there first.

One could argue that by the very nature of Reddit, it is the most interesting thing on the internet since it aggregates content across nearly 10,000 active subreddits. Virtually everything worth seeing on the internet has made it to Reddit at some point, it just might take some digging to find the goods (but far less searching than if we didn't have Reddit at all)

Every time I visit reddit, the layout breaks my brain.
How a site with such a poor format became so popular, is weird.

Looks like IAMA is back online with a big FU message to Reddit stating that they don't trust Reddit Admins to manage AMA's without taking fees so they are going to operate entirely without admin support.

If you could post about how you don't like Reddit about nine or ten more times that'd be great.

Yes you will find some horrible neckbeards on Reddit, especially if you browse subreddits where you expect to find horrible people. So go to r/cutedeadgirls and r/fatpeoplehate and you'll get a nasty dose of internet bullies.
But if you have a hobby like photography, stamp collecting or astronomy - there's a community for you and probably a legit expert who posts regularly. It's a great resource but be careful where you tread - NSFL is not a tag to take lightly.
