I hate to say it, trade now while his value is at an all time high.

Trade our best player at a time when we've finally addressed a lot of needs, are very much on the rise, and have come off the back of winning a round in the playoffs?
Contracts negotiations involve a lot of posturing and cat and mouse games early on. Doesn't mean we should throw in the towel now.

Yeah, no.
This team is probably only a couple years away from going for it and we're going to need him.

It was said yesterday on TSN that DH wanted 5 years, the Flames wanted 7, they settled on 6 with the modified ntc the last 2 years of the deal.

I understand that the asking is high, but this is a guy that is a true leader and captain for a young up and coming team. He's a Flames guy through and through and you just can't buy or find that anywhere else.
I say stay the course, give him his well deserved pay day, and run with it.

Will we really?
Brodie and Hamilton both in their prime years will be playing the top minutes for Calgary. 35 year old Giordano is playing second pairing and potentially making more than both of Calgary's top pairing guys.
That is a premium better spent on either a better top 6 supporting cast for Monahan/Bennett/gaudreau or on better depth defenders so Calgary can weather an injury or keep their top pairing fresh.
Not having a 7 million dollar second pairing guy like Brian Campbell is How Chicago can have guys like Hossa and sharp to augment their top guys.
That is the while problem with the Giordano extension; by the time this team is a serious contender, he will be a secondary contributor. However , if you want this team to be a serious contender quicker, trading Giordano is the most surefire way to do it.

It's a slippery slope. On the one hand Giordano would get a massive haul, and with Treliving/Burke they would take a team to the cleaners. However... It is Gio, he's impossible to replace and I think he sets the culture of this club. I feel the locker room would take a big hit if he was dealt, so no.

Trading for Hamilton doesn't make Giordano expendable... It makes Wideman expendable. Even if Giordano is our #3 by the time we are really contending, what's the harm in him getting paid a little more than Brodie and Hamilton? Besides, Gio makes whatever defenseman partnered with him significantly better. And lastly, he's our freakin' captain and has been our best player when you look past his unfortunate injuries.

"What's the harm?"
I just explained what the harm is. If you are paying guys to play below their salary level it severely hampers the ability to fill out the rest of your roster.
Having overpaid players negates any value you get from underpaid players, it removes your competitive advantage.

If Treliving can't get something very close to 5 years and $7 million per season he needs to walk away and began looking for a trading partner. Like Treliving says, you need to keep your heart out of the negotiations.

Well it's a good thing we didn't agree to the 9m x 8, right? I don't want us overpaying for Giordano, but I also don't want us to lowball him to the point where he feels undervalued to this team. He brings so much to this organization.

Personally, 5 years and $7.5M is my ceiling for term and money. If he wants more of one, the other needs to suffer. If he wants more on both, he can get paid somewhere else.
Front load the 5/$37.5M to give him cash in hand now. $10.0 $10.0, $7.5, $5.0, $5.0

Are we really getting worked up over something Kypreos said/reported?

Who is getting worked up? It's just a philosophical discussion about cap management.

I'd just go 7.5 x 6. Frontload the first 3 years 9m, the last 3 years 6m.

Just sayin'...it feels like some are ready to unload Gio because of an unsubstantiated rumour regarding a yet to be negotiated deal. If it is just philosophical bantering, have at it, but like all philosophical bantering, what's the point?

What's the point of 90 per cent of the comments on this forum? We're all just speculating and expressing our opinions.

If we sign Gio to 7 or 8 years he will be turning 33 at the start of the extension. Situation is very similar to Chara and shows the dangers of a 7 or 8 year contract.
7 yrs / $45,500,000 Average Salary $6,500,000
2011-12 34yrs S7,500,000 cap hit $6,916,665
2012-13 35yrs $6,000,000 cap hit $6,916,667
2013-14 36yrs $8,000,000 cap hit $6,916,667
2014-15 37yrs $7,000,000 cap hit $6,916,667
2015-16 38yrs $7,000,000 cap hit $6,916,667
2016-17 39yrs $5,000,000 cap hit $6,916,667
2017-18 40yrs $4,000,000 cap hit $4,000,000
It was a good deal when he signed it, franchise defenceman and team leader. Today he isn't nearly as effective and is getting less so each year. Boston has 3 more years of cap hit on that contract, one of the reasons they have major cap troubles today. Also note that Chara has been much more durable than Gio missing only a handful of games each year until last year.
I want Gio to be a part of this team until he retires but we need to remove emotion from the equation. Max term should be 5 or 6 years and if he wants 8-9M/year then it should be a 2 or 3 year deal. I trust Treliving to get a decent deal done but they should tell the agent to revise their initial ask.
Edit: If of course that really is the initial ask and Kypreos isn't full of crap.
