Backlund is the comparison I have been using today - the Flames got themselves a slightly more productive Backlund to play RW.

And a 6'5" 22 year old Brodie.

Ferland is another Bouma (but bigger, meaner and more talented).

And Bennett is the offspring of a Gaudreau-Monahan-Bouma genetic experiment.

Updated your post, but yeah. Solid off season so far.

Seems like a lot of good things about Frolik. What are some downsides to his game though?

He doesn't have high end skill. If he did, he would be one of the top players in the game.

This is a calculated revenge signing from when the Jets signed Jokinen away from us. But really, a great signing by Mr. T.

Jokinen was a bum who brought nothing but losing with him. Frolik is a winner.

So he is exactly what we all want.

A better producing Backlund.

As for Frolik, everyone already knows he can play anywhere from the 1st line to to the 3rd line. Read quotes from the Jets where they said when they needed a line to get going they would put Frolik and that line and it would start going. He's a very versatile, responsible player that can play anywhere in your top 9. And he signed for less than what many people believed he would. Kind of a strange contract to get up in arms about, especially since he's only 27. Great signing.

edit: I actually thought I was in the Frolik signing thread. My bad, sorry for derailing.

Moved from the Belesky signing thread

What does a Hockey trade and signing an RFA have to do with UFAs?

I totally agree that the Flames would be better off sitting out UFA signings...

The very best UFA signing was Hudler ... second best Wideman..... the UFA signing of Bouwmeester ruined a perfectly good playoff contending club for 5 years.

Not just for the Flames but for all teams the UFA signing risks generally far out-weigh the rewards.

For every Chara signing that works there are 4 of Bouwmeester, Redden, Erhoff, Ville Leino Brad Richards, David Clarkson, Federov, Semin, Selanne and Kariya to the Avs .... A mistake in the UFA signing over 2 years sinks a team further than any other hockey transaction this side of the Leeman-Gilmour trade.

The best UFA signings are 1M 1 yr deals that Selanne took to get back to the Ducks or Tanguay back to the Flames.

You said you don't like paying players for what they've done on other teams. Hamilton hasn't played a single game for the Flames. Should they not have signed him?

So you think the Flames would be better off to start the season without Hudler, Wideman (trade and sign, but same thing), Frolik, Bollig, Engelland, Hiller and Ramo?

I don't.

I generally don't like huge UFA siginings because of the pricetag and the age of UFAs. But mid to lower level ones are fine. And Frolik is at the upper end of a mid-level signing .

Yeah, a decent price and 27 years old. For a player that can play anywhere in your lineup and wanted to be in Calgary. There's just really nothing to dislike about it.

I'm not as keen on the signing as some (the market wasn't nearly as overheated as usual), but I do look forward to seeing what Frolik can do on the second line. The Flames need to keep improving, and I think Frolik will help with our depth scoring, and it sounds like the PK.
UFA market isn't the solution, but when the only asset they are dealing is cash and cap space, which they have, I am all for it.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I like this one because he is 27 and has the things we need: A PKer and a good puck possession player. And he contributes a .5 PPG clip too. I think he will become a fan favorite rather quick. He gives it all every shift, so he'll fit here quite nicely.

You guys are going to love Frolik. He is an excellent team player, and a great play-maker. It really hurts that the Jets could not resign him, but I hope he does well with the Flames.

Love that he's a depth scorer who should put up 35+ points playing up and down the line up. Won't be depended upon to carry the offence like gaudreau, Monahan, hudler... But will find ways to contribute.

Rule clarification, are we supposed to drink twice or once?
