No....10.5 is the starting point for young multiple cup winning centers.
You think the Flames are paying a dollar over 6 million for Monahan next summer?

That doesn't mean that he isn't a 1 dimensional forward.

That depends on how many cups he has by then.

Agreed, that's a ridiculous amount of money to be spending on 4 players -- Unreal.

No chance. They were looking for a top-end scoring winger so one of one their centers has Hornqvist to play with and the other has Kessel.

Not until they win another cup, if they can motivate Kessel late in the season they could be dangerous.

This actually adds a lot of depth for the Penguins by significantly upgrading the top 6. They have to win and win now, Crosby and Malkin are in their prime there is no option to create a balanced forward corps of muckers. Because you can't build that other than through the draft. Pittsburg can't wait for that. And they can't sign Beleskeys and Froliks with their cap situation.
They basically now have two top flight scoring lines that are roughly equivalent to any other top line in the league. And this is a huge upgrade for Crosby.
Chris Kunitz - Sidney Crosby - Phil Kessel
David Perron - Evgeni Malkin - Patric Hornqvist
Mix and match as you would. Two of the best centres in the game, 1 elite winger and 3 good to excellent wingers. This move pushes Dupuis and Bennett out of the top six ensuring that every player is a bonafide top six forward now on power up mode centred by Crosby and Malkin.

Is it just me or is the return for Kessel very underwhelming, ESPECIALLY considering they retained value.
Pit looks great on the wings now, question is still going to be goaltending as they have some depth (prospect wise) on D.

Well at least those comparing Crosby situation of never getting an elite scoring winger to Iginla never getting an elite center can end. Sure his overall game isn't that great and he's a floater at times but as far as a pure offensive winger goes it doesn't get much better than Kessel. If he plays mostly with Crosby this should put Sid back into the 100 points club barring injuries.

Personally, I think Kessel will look really good beside Crosby. He certainly has the offensive acumen to figure out how to get open and be ready for Crosby's passes.
But beyond that, the key for me is his speed.
Crosby is one of the fastest players in the league and creates much of his offense from his explosive acceleration. But teams simply double teamed him, and cut off his space.
If they can utilize Kessel's speed as a way to get more open ice for Crosby, look out.

Kessel went from the worst situation for himself to the best. But he's going to need to motivate himself up to keep up to either Crosby or Malkin.
At $5M/season it's a good trade for Pittsburgh. Kapanen is a very inconsistent prospect and hasn't really brought an A game to big time situations like the WJCs. He might wilt in TO. Harrington is a better bet. And I'm betting the conditional first will end up not being a first.

It's not 5 mill. Leafs kept 1.2 mill per year. His cap hit will 6.8 mill per for Pit.

1) it's $6.8M, not $5M
2) how will it not be a 1st? Do you think Pitt misses the playoffs each of the next 2 years?

Thanks - must've heard wrong from someone. That's not as great a deal.
It's a fairly square deal all around. It's great for Kessel, no more interviews, a middling interest hockey city (not under a microscope but still a good fan base), not one but two great centres, plus a pretty deep defence.
