Default Laddy Smid injury

So I was listening to the Fan 960 prior to the game tonight and Rob Kerr and Boomer were talking contract extensions and finding cash for raises etc.

Boomer mentioned Smid's 3.5 million might go on Long Term Injury Reserve or be an insurance case so that free's up cap space.

This got me thinking as I have heard from threads on CP about how Smid might retire or go on LTIR due to this neck injury.

From everything that management has said it was "Smid's injury is season ending and he will be ready for fall training camp.

Clearly there is a disconnect somewhere and I am trying to figure this out. Anybody else have an odd feeling about this? On the radio this was said not as a rumor or an opinion but almost as a matter of fact which got me thinking.

It would be tough to lose a guy like Smid but also for such a young guy too.

Thoughts?

Smid would be great to have right now... I hope he's ok to go next season, really too bad for him

Getting rocked twice like he did in addition to his prior injuries means that it'll be difficult for him to return. It's not out of the question, but I don't know if he will be able to. Because he is so young, maybe taking a year off entirely might help things heal properly.

I wish him the best and that he gets better soon.

I hope he's able to heal properly, but I also hope he rappels from the jumbotron during the anthems in game 3 and suits up

He he suit up first. It would be awkward for the nearly 20,000 to watch him get dressed on the ice... wouldn't it be better for Bouma and/or Giordano to do such a dramatic stunt anyway?

Honestly, I'd love to have the uninjured Smid in the lineup right now but we're talking about some serious neck injuries.

Theres probably been some serious consideration about calling it a career.

I have said this before, but I fully expect him to retire.

That being said, I like and miss Smid.

Smid is a warrior and someone who would be great on the 3rd pairing right now.

I hope he recovers.

.
If his injury is career ending, I would think he will go on Long Term Injury Reserve until his contract is completed

Yup. Very little incentive for him to retire and give up the $7.75 million he is owed for the next 2 years.

Just like Pronger and Savard.

Sorry, this likely isn't the topic of the day on July first, but has there been any update anywhere on Smid's injury?

I'm still a fan and still think his skillset is useful on this team even with what we've done, but him coming back would necessitate some decisions!

Don't like him or don't think he fills a need on our blueline? I still think he's a just-slightly-short-of elite shut-down defenceman (if 100%) that fills a need for us with so many offensively-minded d-men.

I like him, but a younger version of him. I think he has lost a step (maybe 2) and that will show on this team and in this league.

He's 29. I see your point but age-wise as a shutdown d he should just be coming into his own. The injury though is the wildcard.

I am more concerned with his play and the age.

The age is a number, and sadly I don't think he plays like a 29 yr old player, he place more like a 33-35 yr old player.

No knock on him, he played/plays a more physical style which beats up a body.

As I said I like him, but to me he appears to have slowed but I think if he has a good training camp/pre-season the Flames can move him to a team that needs a player like him.

I think he's played with some nagging injuries. For training camp I hope he plays well enough to be a Flame but it's not like I'm holding my breath.

I suppose that brings us back to my question. Has there been any update on his status health-wise? Seems like it's been a few months with no update. Nobody ran into him in an elevator or anything? No official progress reports?

I'd like to see how he plays in training camp. He has been an excellent D-man for us at times. Possible he could still fit in our top 6.
