Not surprising.
Short term though, which is surprising.

Short term justifies the fairly high cost though it still feels like paying for what Green's achieved 5 years ago.

Any Leaf fan who had hoped to say goodbye to Dion just lost a lot of faith.

Good contract for the Wings as he will fit into their style of play well and the term is fantastic as if things don't work out it's not a long term albatross contract.

Full NTC.
Apparently Green was asking for a lot of term and had to reduce his years to get a deal done.

Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Red Wings wanted Jeff Petry. They signed Mike Green.

Those are pretty much opposite players.

The Royal Half @theroyalhalf
Is Andrej Sekera making Mike Green money or is Mike Green making Andrej Sekera money?

Ah! Thats what they're looking for.
Its not terrible because they didnt give up term, but the dollars are ugly.
Poll 30 GMs about who they'd rather have on their blueline, Hamilton @ $5.75 or Green @ $6M regardless of term and I think you'll get 30 identical answers.

I actually think Sekera might have been the better signing. I have no idea if hes a RH shot though.

He's a lefty but hard to say. Sekera's been a better player than Green (3rd pairing/scratched) but 6 years is a little bit much.

Not sure why people keep comparing UFA signingts to RFA signings. Apples and oranges. Might as well be comparing Monahan's contract to Kessel's then.

I like that Detroit paid more in order to keep the term down.
It is almost always the case that teams give up more term in order to keep the AAV down but the result is usually that the last few years of the deal are hell.
Detroit is saying we'll pay you, but it has to be for only the years that we want.
I love that and I think we'll see a lot more of it going forward. (I would LOVE a short but expensive contract for Giordano)

His production from the last three years begs to differ with that. Great deal for the wings.
