One of the strengths Frolik has to offer is his ability to play up and down the lineup. It's no stretch to imagine him playing on the Jets third line next season. Maybe he scores 15 goals playing on a line centred by Adam Lowry. He'll still be valuable and important, but if he's making north of $4 million, the external view will be he's too expensive.

Four years starting at $3.8 million then inching up and averaging out at $4 million per year seems reasonable. The player gets security and $16 million. The Jets are comfortable with both the cash and cap number and have flexibility going forward.

My guess is the Jets want a four-year deal for less money and Walsh wants five years and more money.

If Treliving overpaid by less than 10% to get Frolik as a UFA, I'm just fine with that.

Just a thought: Given the similarities between Frolik now and Hudler when he arrived, could be that Frolik actually slots in with Monahan and Gaudreau, and Hudler gets moved to the second line to be Bennett's mentor. That would balance out the scoring very nicely, I should think.

His versatility really helps too, and when all is said and done we've got a realible, versatile forward for his prime years at a cap hit that should be just perfect in about 2 years with the cap going up.

I think its a great deal, I was sincerely worried about a massive overpayment but Treliving clearly knows what hes doing.

Maybe not, but one weakness the Anaheim series exposed is that the Flames didn't really have any big threats on the second line. When you have three top offensive talents at forward, as the Flames did most of last season, it makes sense to put them all on one line. If you have four, it's probably better to have two on the first line and two on the second, so that every skilled forward has at least one linemate who's good enough to play with him.

One of the great things about the '89 Flames was having Nieuwendyk and Loob on one line, Gilmour and Mullen on another. On any given night, either one of those could be the #1 line.

I'm not saying it will fall out this way, but it does seem nice to have the option.

No offense to Pouliot but Frolik has eclipsed 40 points four times in his career while Pouliot is the perennial 30 point player. I think Frolik is the more talented player with higher upside but they are close in pay and overall talent I suppose.

Not only is Frolik more talented offensively, he is miles better defensively.
