But even this ask is stupid. Emotion aside being our captain an all, look at Wideman for example, he cashed in on his season before when he was a UFA at 28 and signing with the flames at 5.25AAV. Only earns that contract this past season. Gotta look at comparable numbers league wide, just a big piss off with even looking at that ask.

The guy will get run out of town if he signs close to that, or even a 9MIL a year contract. GUARANTEED

You ask high because the counter is always lower. He asks for 9 expecting to get countered with 6.5 hoping to settle around 7.75 for 4-5 years. It's like none of you ever heard of negotiation.

People need to chill out.

Gio is a UFA. He's not obligated to sign any extentions at all.

We can easily play out this season without any trades or signings, and then let the market dictate his value in the 2016 offseason.

This is a player who wants to finish his career in Calgary, well let's see if he holds up to his end of the deal.

His agent is asking high, and I'm sure treliving is on the other end offering low enough to justify the term. They will either meet at the middle now, or wait til market indicates Gio's value. And Gio is not going to go wherever the money is either as a UFA.. He's going to consider factors that work for him.

Quit rippin' our team's aptain on the first damn day he is eligible for an extension. He's a year away from free agency.

Jmo no D man should get 9m per.
Gio should sign for 7.5m but will he.
Anytime i have heard Winters talk on 960 in the past he reminds me of home owner that is selling a 700k house and wants 2m for it.
Never been a fan of Winters.
9m is a joke.

The one who asks isn't stupid.. people are overreacting here.. but true, he isn't worth 8+ if he cant stay healthy.

Totally within his rights to ask for that. If I'm a GM, I don't go come close to that contract.

I love Gio, but given his age, injury history, and lack of a long term track record of playing at an elite level, asking for Subban's contract is totally absurd. I'd be ok with 5 years 40 million, and that's where I'd draw a hard line.

My thoughts:

$9 million
$9 million
$7 million
$7 million
$5 million
$5 million

6 years, $42 million. $7.0 million AAV.

I expect it's just posturing by the agent.

The Flames absolutely can't afford Gio at $9 million with Gaudreau and Monahan contracts coming next year.

Does anyone here know how a negotiation works? It probably is true, he asked for 9 million dollars per year. Treliving is probably asking for something around 6 million per year. They will meet in the middle.

Articles and tweets like these are only made to create media hype and send fans into a tizzy. Exactly what it is doing to lots of people here. Just take a breathe.

It's really frustrating watching people crap on our best player because of what he asked for.

Nobody "crapped out" and everybody likes him.

When the ask is absurd it all comes out. 2 good seasons and asking for a 72 Mil contract for a 33 yr old guy who is just coming off a serious injury?... WHAT

I agree completely. Gio is the Flames - his leadership, character, one of the best captains in the NHL and was on track to be a Norris winner except for an unfortunate injury.

His agent asking for a steep price to start is just part of the negotiation process. What counts is the term and AAV of the contact - I'm expect the AAV to be around $7 million to $7.5 million and if the term is 5 or 6 years - it will be a good deal for Gio and the Flames.

Except it isn't absurd. It's a negotiation. This is exactly how they work.

It's not absurd though, it's being a smart negotiator. He know's he's not going to get $9mil AAV, and it's not like he's sitting there saying if they don't pay him he'll just walk.

Man.. Who on god's green earth even needs 72 million?

I don't understand players sometimes when it comes to these stratospheric prices. Especially those as down to earth as Giordano appears to be. I hope he realizes that the more reasonable he is in his asking price, the easier it is for the team to sign the necessary pieces to be a perennial contender. You think that he would put that ahead of personal gain. For a guy who seems to have a good head on his shoulders, you think he would also consider that he'll be going on 33 when he signs, and he doesn't have the track record of playing 82 game a year to be asking quite that much.

Hopefully negotiations will lower that by 1-2 mil to a reasonable price.

The best players in the NBA, NFL and MLB make 2-3x what the best players in the NHL do.

I disagree - it's a stupid opener. And before you ask, yes, I know how negotiations work - it's what I do for a living. Of course, you come in with a high opening number, but you don't want it to be so ridiculous that it gets the hackles up on the other side.

But they also have 2-3x the expenses. Just ask Patrick Ewing.
